The European Union is also represented\n within the G7.<\/li><li>Russia\n was also a part of the group and it was known as G-8.However, Russia was\n removed after it annexed Crimea from Ukraine, which was seen as a\n violation of Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity.<\/li><li>Further,\n the G7 has also been criticised as G-20 is seen as more representative\n body when compared to G7 as emerging economies like India and China are\n not part of the G7.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/donald-trump-reportedly-wants-greenland-can-you-really-buy-a-foreign-territory-that-big-5914523\/\"><strong>Donald\nTrump reportedly wants Greenland. Can you really buy a foreign territory<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>U.S.\n President has said that he wants to buy Greenland. However, the Denmark\n government dismissed his statement and said that Greenland was not for\n sale.<\/li><li>Greenland\n is the world&#8217;s largest island. It is an autonomous Denmark dependent\n territory with limited self-government and its own parliament.<\/li><li>Denmark\n contributes two thirds of Greenland&#8217;s budget revenue while the rest comes\n mainly from fishing.<\/li><li>The\n USA has long seen Greenland as strategically important and had established\n a radar base at Thule at the start of the Cold War.<\/li><li>The\n potential oil, gas and rare earth mineral reserves have also attracted\n prospecting firms.<\/li><li>Further,\n there have been several instances in the history of nations and especially\n the US acquiring foreign territory against payment.<\/li><li>One\n famous example is the purchase of Alaska which Russia&nbsp;transferred to\n the US in 1867 for $7.2 million. The project is aligned with \u2018Swachh Bharat Mission\u2019.<\/li><li>The\n technology for Bio-toilets has been designed and \u2018Made in India\u2019. It has\n been developed jointly by Indian Railways\u2019 Engineers &amp; DRDO\u2019s\n scientists<\/li><li>Bio-toilet\n is a decomposition mechanized toilet system which decomposes human\n excretory waste in the digester tank using specific high graded aerobic\n bacteria which further converts it into methane gas, Carbon dioxide gas\n and water.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/cities\/Delhi\/centre-takes-steps-to-control-onion-prices-in-national-capital\/article29216269.ece\"><strong>Centre\ntakes steps to control onion prices in national capital<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Government\n has planned to substantially increase the daily supply of onions from its\n buffer stock held with NAFED.<\/li><li>This\n decision was taken in the backdrop of heavy rains in key onion growing\n States such as Maharashtra and Karnataka which may increase the prices of\n onion.<\/li><li>National\n Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) was\n established in 1958.It is registered under the Multi State Co-operative\n Societies Act.<\/li><li>NAFED\n was set up to promote cooperative marketing of agricultural produce to\n benefit farmers.<\/li><li>The\n objectives of the NAFED are (a)To organize, promote and develop marketing,\n processing and storage of agricultural, horticultural and forest produce\n (b)To distribute agricultural machinery, implements and other inputs (c)To\n undertake inter-state, import and export trade, wholesale or retail and\n (d)To act and assist for technical advice in agricultural production.<\/li><li>Agricultural\n farmers are the main members of NAFED who have the authority to say in the\n form of members of the General Body in the working of NAFED.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/manmohan-singh-set-to-lose-spg-cover\/article29254685.ece\"><strong>Manmohan\nSingh set to lose SPG cover<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\n Central Government has withdrawn Special Protection Group (SPG) cover for\n former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.<\/li><li>The\n Special protection group (SPG) was set up in 1985 after the assassination\n of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.<\/li><li>Later\n on it became a statutory body under Special Protection Group Act, 1988.It\n was formed to protect the Prime Ministers of India. At the time, the Act\n did not include former Prime Ministers.<\/li><li>However,\n after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in 1991 the SPG\n Act was amended offering SPG protection to all former Prime Ministers and\n their families.<\/li><li>The\n act was amended again in 2002 to make provision for an annual review. The\n review is based on threat perception that is conducted by security\n agencies.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/imf-report-flags-several-delays-in-indias-data-reporting\/article29254041.ece\"><strong>IMF\nreport flags several delays in India\u2019s data reporting<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>According\n to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) \u201cAnnual Observance Report of the\n Special Data Dissemination Standard for 2018\u201d, India has failed to comply\n with multiple requirements prescribed in the Special Data Dissemination\n Standard (SDDS).<\/li><li>The\n IMF launched the SDDS initiative in 1996 to guide members to enhance data\n transparency and help financial market participants with adequate\n information to assess the economic situations of individual countries. India\n had subscribed to the SDDS in 1996.<\/li><li>There\n are over 20 data categories which IMF considers for this report to capture\n a nation\u2019s economic health including national accounts (GDP, GNI),\n production indices, employment, and central government operations.<\/li><li>The\n IMF has acknowledged India\u2019s deviations in the SDDS but termed them non\n serious. However, India has said that its non-compliance with IMF\n standards is a one-off event due to technical glitches in the National\n Summary Data Page (NSDP).<\/li><li>National\n Summary Data Page (NSDP) provides quick access to a single comprehensive\n source of economic and financial data. The IMF requires that these data\n should be available at regular intervals in public domain.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/modi-johnson-agree-to-step-up-bilateral-cooperation\/article29255469.ece\"><strong>Modi,\nJohnson agree to step up bilateral cooperation<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Indian\n Prime Minister has met the UK Prime minister at the sidelines of G-7\n summit being held in Biarritz, France.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The\n two leaders discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade,\n defence and security.<\/li><li>This\n meeting came against the backdrop of the Indian government revoking the\n special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcating the state into two\n Union Territories.<\/li><li>During\n the discussion, UK Prime minister said that the issue of Kashmir is a\n bilateral issue between India and Pakistan which needs to be resolved\n through dialogue.<\/li><li>The\n trade issues were also discussed between the two countries.UK is the third\n largest Foreign direct investment (FDI) in India and is among India\u2019s main\n trading partners.<\/li><li>The\n trade between the two countries is around Euro 13.6 billion in 2018.\n Moreover, trade had increased at an average rate of 8.8% per year between\n 2002 and 2018.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/india\/tasty-and-nutritious-iit-guwahati-researchers-develop-meat-of-the-future-lab-grown-meat-1566800043237.html\"><strong>IIT-Guwahati\nresearchers develop &#8216;meat of the future<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Researchers\n at IIT-Guwahati have developed cell based meat. This will be a step\n towards cruelty-free food thereby saving the environment as well as the\n animals.<\/li><li>Cell\n based meat or cellular agriculture aims at creating clean meat. Cell based\n meat is a process in which a small sample of cells is taken from an animal\n painlessly and then used to grow meat in a manufacturing facility.<\/li><li>Currently,\n there are many environmental concerns arising out of livestock industry\n and meat consumption such as (a)increased use of water, food and energy to\n raise livestock (b) large-scale animal husbandry contributing to global\n warming through greenhouse gas emissions and (c)antibiotic resistance.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Further,\n due to rapid increase in population, the meat industry has been facing\n immense pressure in keeping up with the food requirements.<\/li><li>Researchers\n have also cited the predictions from the UN population prospects which\n said that the current meat industry will not be able to meet the global\n needs by 2050.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/cvc-sets-up-panel-to-probe-bank-fraud\/article29253856.ece\"><strong>CVC\nsets up panel to probe bank fraud<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\n Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has constituted Advisory Board for\n Banking Frauds (ABBF).The four-member board will be headed by former\n Vigilance Commissioner T M Bhasin.<\/li><li>The\n board will function as the first level of examination of all large fraud\n cases before recommendations or references are made to the investigative\n agencies by the respective Public Sector Banks.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>The\n board\u2019s jurisdiction will be confined to those cases involving officers of\n General Manager level and above in the PSBs in respect of an allegation of\n fraud in a borrowal account.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The\n banks would refer all large fraud cases above \u20b950 crore to the board and\n on receipt of its recommendation or advice, the bank concerned would take\n further action in such matter.<\/li><li>The\n CVC was set up by the Government in 1964 on the recommendation of the\n Santhanam Committee. In 2003, the Parliament enacted CVC Act conferring\n statutory status on the CVC.<\/li><li>The\n CVC is not controlled by any Ministry or Department. It is an independent\n body which is only responsible to the Parliament. CVC receives complaints\n on corruption or misuse of office and recommend appropriate action.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/business\/fms-announcement-may-help-revive-investor-confidence-boost-markets-5936860\/\"><strong>FM\u2019s\nannouncement may help revive investor confidence, boost markets<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Finance\n minister had announced a number of economic measures to revive economic\n growth through fiscal stimulus.<\/li><li>These\n measures were announced in the backdrop of (a) domestic and global growth\n concerns (b) weakening demand for India companies and (c) the threat of\n escalation of tariff war between US and China.<\/li><li>The\n steps announced were such as (a) removing enhanced surcharge on foreign\n portfolio investors (FPIs) (b) capital infusion of \u20b970,000 crore in public\n sector banks (c) addressing delayed GST payments (d) securing transmission\n of lower repo rates among others.<\/li><li>These\n steps are expected to infuse liquidity into the market and thereby reduce\n pressure from several companies. It may also revive the investors\u2019\n confidence.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/g7-summit-modi-trump-to-meet-today-kashmir-and-trade-will-be-on-table-5936545\/\"><strong>Modi,\nTrump to meet: Kashmir and trade will be on table<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Indian\n Prime Minister will meet US President on the side-lines of the G-7 Summit\n in France.<\/li><li>The\n two leaders are expected to hold talks to resolve the differences over\n trade and investment.<\/li><li>India\n and the United States has differences over issues such as trade imbalance\n between India and the US. India\u2019s exports to the U.S. in 2017-18 stood at\n $47.9 billion while imports were at $26.7 billion. The trade balance is in\n favour of India.<\/li><li>India\n has also imposed long pending retaliatory tariffs on 29 US products after\n US had withdrawn Generalized system of preferences (GSP) for Indian\n exporters.<\/li><li>GSP\n is a preferential tariff system extended by developed countries to\n developing countries. It is a preferential arrangement in the sense that\n it allows concessional low\/zero tariff imports from developing countries.<\/li><li>India\n has also dragged the U.S. to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) dispute\n settlement mechanism over the imposition of import duties on steel and\n aluminium.<\/li><li>Further,\n there are other issues such as (a) India\u2019s new rules on e-commerce that\n affected firms such as Amazon and Walmart and (b) Data localisation rules\n which forced foreign companies to store their data locally.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/articleshow_comments\/70832249.cms?from=mdr\"><strong>India\nhoping for Iran deal, Russia\u2019s inclusion in G7<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\n Group of Seven (G7) summit is being held in Biarritz, France.<\/li><li>The\n summit will discuss issues such as (a) global free trade (b) environment\n (c) climate change (d) digital economy among others.<\/li><li>However,\n India would be interested in two other issues which are (a) Relations\n between Iran and US and (b) Inclusion of Russia in the G7 group.<\/li><li>The\n relations between Iran and the US have deteriorated since US had withdrawn\n from a 2015 Iran nuclear deal to limit Iran&#8217;s nuclear activities.<\/li><li>However,\n the other five nations including France has remained committed to the deal\n but Iran has started to increase its nuclear activity in response to the\n US reinstating and tightening economic sanctions.<\/li><li>Hence,\n France has urged US President to offer some sort of relief to Iran such as\n lifting sanctions on oil sales to China and India or establishing a new\n credit line to enable exports.<\/li><li>Further,\n US President is also expected to urge G7 leaders to readmit Russia to the\n G7 group.<\/li><li>Earlier,\n Russia was also a part of the group However, Russia was removed after it\n annexed Crimea from Ukraine, which was seen as a violation of Ukraine\u2019s\n sovereignty and territorial integrity<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/this-word-means-gravitational-lensing-5936335\/\">TEMPLATES<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>NASA will study the\n formation of new stars under a program called <strong>Targeting Extremely Magnified Panchromatic Lensed Arcs and Their\n Extended Star Formation<\/strong>, or TEMPLATES.<\/li><li>The program has four main\n goals: a) Measure how many new stars are forming, to determine how rapidly\n galaxies form stars, b) Map the star-formation rate in four selected galaxies,\n c) Compare the young and old stellar populations and d) Measure the\n conditions of the gas within these galaxies<\/li><li>The study will be\n conducted using NASA\u2019s James Webb Space Telescope. Scientists would take\n help of a natural phenomenon call <strong>gravitational\n lensing<\/strong> which would magnify the light from distant galaxies that are\n at or near the peak of star formation.<\/li><li>Gravitational lenses are\n considered to be natural, cosmic telescopes. The phenomenon occurs when a\n huge amount of matter, such as a massive galaxy or cluster of galaxies,\n creates a gravitational field that distorts and magnifies the light from\n objects behind it.<\/li><li>The effect allows\n researchers to study the details of early galaxies too far away to be seen\n otherwise with even the most powerful space telescopes.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/india\/nasa-says-49-debris-from-a-sat-test-still-in-space-indian-expert-slams-us-report\/articleshow\/70834149.cms\">NASA\nsays 49 debris from A-Sat test still in space, Indian missile expert slams\nreport<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>According to NASA\u2019s\n latest orbital debris quarterly news, 49 debris from India\u2019s Mission\n Shakti remain on orbit as of July 15<sup>th<\/sup>. The report has however\n been rejected by India\u2019s missile experts.<\/li><li>Mission Shakti was an\n Anti-satellite (ASAT) missile test conducted by India in March 2019. The\n Mission was carried out by shooting down Microsat-R with a modified\n exo-atmospheric missile of the ballistic missile defence at an altitude of\n 300 km. Microsat-R is a imaging satellite which was launched by ISRO using\n a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in January 2019.<\/li><li>Space debris are\n artificial material that is orbiting Earth but is no longer functional.\n They consists of dead satellites, spent rocket motors, nuts and bolts etc.\n Space debris is a threat to active satellites and spaceships as they pose\n risk of collisions.<\/li><li>According to Space-track\n website, in total, 14,520 debris and 5165 functional and non-functional\n satellites are currently in space. India currently has 96 functional and\n non-functional satellites in space and 173 species of trackable debris.\n USA has 4,804 debris and 1791 functional and non-functional satellites.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/india\/cop14-in-india-modi-to-address-un-meet-to-combat-desertification-on-september-2\/articleshow\/70831845.cms\">PM\nto address UN conference in September to combat desertification<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Indian Prime Minister\n Narendra Modi will address 14th session of the Conference of Parties\n (COP-14) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification\n (UNCCD) in September 2019. India, for the first time will be hosting UNCCD\n COP at Greater Noida from September 2-13.<\/li><li>The United Nations\n Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the sole legally binding\n international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable\n land management. It was established in 1994. It has 197 parties.<\/li><li>UNCCD seeks to work\n towards maintaining and restoring land and soil productivity and\n mitigating the effects of drought.<\/li><li>The COP is the supreme\n decision-making body of a Convention. All States that are Parties to the\n Convention are represented at the COP, at which they review the\n implementation of the Convention.<\/li><li>COP 14 of the UNCCD will\n focus on how to restore 2 billion hectares of degraded land and assess the\n progress made in this direction since COP13 held in 2017.<\/li><li>India is reeling under\n severe problem of land degradation. A 2016 report by the Indian Space\n Research Organisation found that about 29% of India\u2019s land (in 2011-13)\n was degraded.<\/li><li>Recently, the\n Environment Ministry has launched a flagship project on enhancing capacity\n on forest landscape restoration (FLR) and Bonn Challenge in India. There\n will be a pilot phase of 3.5 years implemented in the States of Haryana,\n Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Nagaland and Karnataka.<\/li><li>Ministry of Environment,\n Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has partnered with The International\n Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for the project.<\/li><li>It aims to develop and\n adapt best practices and monitoring protocols for the Indian states and\n build capacity within the five pilot states on FLR and Bonn Challenge.<\/li><li>The Bonn Challenge is a\n global effort to bring 150 million hectares of the world\u2019s deforested and\n degraded land into restoration by 2020, and 350 million hectares by 2030. It\n was launched in 2011 by the Government of Germany and IUCN, and later\n endorsed and extended by the New York Declaration on Forests at the 2014\n UN Climate Summit.<\/li><li>Under the challenge,\n India has pledged to bring into restoration 13 million hectares of\n degraded and deforested land by 2020, and additional 8 million hectares by\n 2030.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/pm-modi-launches-42-mn-redevelopment-project-of-hindu-temple-in-bahrain\/article29252060.ece\">PM\nModi launches $4.2 mn redevelopment project of Hindu temple in Bahrain<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Prime Minister Narendra\n Modi on Sunday launched the $4.2 million redevelopment project of the\n 200-year-old Sreenathji (Sri Krishna) temple in Manama, Bahrain\u2019s capital.\n PM Narendra Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Bahrain.<\/li><li>The Sri Krishna temple is\n estimated to have been established around 1817 and was built by Thathai\n Bhatia Hindu community. It is considered to be one of the oldest temple in\n the Gulf countries.<\/li><li>The redevelopment\n project will be on a piece of land measuring 16,500 square feet. As part\n of the renovated structure, the temple will have a knowledge centre and a\n museum.<\/li><li>It will also have\n special facility to host Hindu weddings. This comes to light after the\n Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority initiated to make the Bahrain a\n hub for wedding destination and boost tourism.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/energy-and-environment\/csir-to-certify-air-quality-monitoring-sensors\/article29254124.ece\">CSIR\nto certify air quality monitoring sensors<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Environment Ministry has\n designated Council of Scientific and Industrial Research\u2014National Physical\n Laboratory (CSIR-NPL) as the national verification agency for certifying air\n quality monitoring instruments.<\/li><li>CSR NPL will develop\n necessary infrastructure, testing and certification facilities conforming\n to ISO standards for both automatic and manual samplers.<\/li><li>Currently, the air\n quality monitoring instruments employed by State and Central Pollution\n Control Boards (SPCB and CPCB) are imported.<\/li><li>The decision to certify\n the instruments has come in the backdrop of anticipation of rising demand\n of air quality monitoring instruments by states against the backdrop of\n National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).<\/li><li>In 2019, National Clean\n Air Programme (NCAP) has been launched for prevention, control and\n abatement of air pollution in India. It is a five-year action plan with\n 2019 as the first year.<\/li><li>It aims at 20%\u201330%\n reduction of PM2.5and PM10 concentration by 2024, taking 2017 as the base\n year for the comparison of concentration.<\/li><li>The programme targets 102\n non-attainment cities which were identified by Central Pollution Control\n Board (CPCB) on the basis of their ambient air quality data between 2011\n and 2015.Non-attainment cities are those which have been consistently\n showing poorer air quality than the National Ambient Air Quality Standards\n (NAAQS).<\/li><li>The NCAP requires cities\n to come up with city-specific plans that include increasing the number of\n monitoring stations, providing technology support, conducting source apportionment\n studies, and strengthening enforcement.<\/li><li>The cities are required\n to implement specific measures in a time-bound manner. The campaign aims at generating greater public participation\n towards Swachhta (cleanliness)<\/li><li>Swachh Bharat Mission is\n a cleanliness campaign initiated by Govt. of India in 2014. It seeks to\n achieve a Clean India by 2019, as a fitting tribute to the 150th Birth\n Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.<\/li><li>Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin)\n aims to improve the levels of cleanliness in rural areas through Solid and\n Liquid Waste Management activities and making villages Open Defecation\n Free (ODF) and clean.<\/li><li>Swachh Bharat Mission\n (Urban) aims at elimination of open defecation, conversion of unsanitary\n toilets to pour flush toilets, eradication of manual scavenging, municipal\n solid waste management and bringing about a behavioural change in people\n regarding healthy sanitation practices.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/cities\/Delhi\/give-specific-timelines-for-cleaning-of-yamuna-ngt\/article29252615.ece\">Give\nspecific timelines for cleaning of Yamuna: NGT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The National Green\n Tribunal (NGT) has directed stakeholders to give specific schedule for\n cleaning the Yamuna. The NGT has also noted that repeated timelines have\n not been adhered to in the last 30 years and pollution of the river\n continues unabated.<\/li><li>Earlier, the NGT had expressed\n dissatisfaction over the cleaning of the Yamuna River and directed Delhi,\n Haryana and Uttar Pradesh governments to submit a performance guarantee of\n \u20b910 crore each within a month.<\/li><li>The NGT had noted that\n almost 67% of the pollutants that enter the Yamuna would be treated by two\n sewage treatment plants at Delhi Gate and Najafgarh under the first phase\n of the Maili se Nirmal Yamuna Revitalisation Project 2017. The project aims\n to bring down pollution levels in the Yamuna River in Delhi.<\/li><li>The Yamuna is the\n longest right bank tributary of River Ganga. It originates from the\n Yamunotri Glacier on the south western slopes of Banderpooch peak in the\n Lower Himalayas, Uttarakhand. It joins river Ganga at Triveni Sangam,\n Prayagraj<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/telling-numbers-counting-amazon-fires-assessing-forest-lost-5936288\/\">Telling\nnumbers: Counting Amazon fires, assessing forest lost<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Amazon rainforest has\n been reeling under fires prompting global concerns.<\/li><li>According to Brazilian\n Space Research Agency (INPE), more than 74,000 fires have been recorded in\n the Amazon region between January and August 2019. There has been an 84% increase\n in the number of fires compared with the same period in 2018<\/li><li>According to scientists from\n the University of Maryland, most of the fires are on agricultural land\n where the forest had already been cleared.<\/li><li>The Amazon rainforest is\n a moist broadleaf tropical rainforest in the Amazon biome that covers most\n of the Amazon basin of South America.<\/li><li>The majority of the\n forest is contained within Brazil (60%), followed by Peru Colombia with\n 10%, and with minor amounts in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana,\n Suriname and French Guiana.<\/li><li>The Amazon is often\n referred to as the \u2018lungs of the planet\u2019 due to its vital role in oxygen\n production.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/news\/wildlife-biodiversity\/cites-cop-2019-18-endangered-sharks-and-rays-afforded-protection-66337\">CITES\nCoP 2019: 18 endangered sharks and rays afforded protection<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>18 species of sharks and\n rays, were included in Appendix II of the Convention on International\n Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). These sharks\n and rays species are threatened by the scale of international trade in\n their fins and meat.<\/li><li>The decision was taken\n at the ongoing CoP 18 of CITES being held in Geneva, Switzerland.<\/li><li>CITES (the Convention on\n International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an\n international agreement between governments. It aims to ensure that\n international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not\n threaten their survival.<\/li><li>Appendix I includes\n species threatened with extinction.
