report:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The report has held that with the right strategies and\n sufficient funding,it is possible to eradicate malaria as early as 2050.<\/li><li>The report has noted that since 2000,global malaria incidence\n and death rates have declined by 36% and 60 % respectively.More than half\n of the world\u2019s countries are malaria-free.<\/li><li>However,there are over 200 million cases of malaria reported\n each year, claiming nearly half a million lives.Malaria cases are rising\n in 55 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.<\/li><li>The report also highlighted the inequity where 29 countries (27\n in Africa) accounted for the large majority of new cases and 85% of global\n deaths in 2017.<\/li><li>On the other hand,38 countries had incidences of fewer than ten\n cases per 1,000 population in 2017 and reported just 5% of total malaria\n deaths.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recommendations:<\/strong>The report identifies three ways to accelerate the decline in\nmalaria cases which are-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Improve implementation of malaria control programmes globally.<\/li><li>Develop and roll out innovative new tools to overcome the\n biological challenges to eradication.<\/li><li>Malaria-endemic countries must be provided with the financial\n investment to fight malaria.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional meat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About African Swine fever:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>African swine fever(ASF) is a highly contagious hemorrhagic\n viral disease of domestic and wild pigs which is responsible for serious\n economic and production losses.<\/li><li>It is caused by a large DNA virus of the Asfarviridae family\n which also infects ticks of the genus Ornithodoros.<\/li><li>The signs of ASF and classical swine fever(CSF) may be similar\n but the ASF virus is unrelated to the CSF virus.<\/li><li>ASF is transmitted through (a)direct contact by live or dead\n pigs and pork products and (b)indirect contact through contaminated feed\n or on contaminated clothing vehicles or as other fomites.<\/li><li>There is no approved vaccine against African Swine fever.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a 12,2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Mandhan(PM-SYM)&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The scheme aims to provide social security to all landholding\n Small and Marginal Farmers.<\/li><li><strong>Aim:<\/strong>Under this scheme,a fixed\n pension of Rs.3,000\/- will be provided to all eligible small and marginal\n farmers.It is a voluntary and contribution based pension scheme.<\/li><li><strong>Contribution:<\/strong>Farmers will have to\n contribute an amount between Rs.55 to Rs.200 per month in the Pension Fund\n till they reach the retirement date i.e. the age of 60 years.<\/li><li>The Central Government will also make an equal contribution of\n the same amount in the pension fund.<\/li><li><strong>Eligibility:<\/strong>Farmers who are of the\n age of 18 years and above and upto 40 years are eligible to join the\n scheme.<\/li><li>Further,the Spouses of the Small and Marginal farmers are also\n eligible to join the scheme separately and they will also get separate\n pension of Rs.3000 when they reach the age of 60 years.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Eklavya Model Residential\nSchool(EMRS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>EMRS scheme was introduced in the year 1997-98 by the Ministry\n of Tribal Affairs,Government of India.<\/li><li>The scheme aims to setup model residential school for Scheduled\n Tribes across India.<\/li><li>The objectives of EMRS are to (a)Provide quality middle and\n high-level education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students in remote areas\n (b)Enable them to avail of reservation in high and professional\n educational courses and in jobs in government and public and private\n sectors and (c)Construction of infrastructure that provides education,\n physical, environmental and cultural needs of student life.<\/li><li>The EMRSs are set up in States\/UTs with grants under Article\n 275(1) of the Constitution of India.<\/li><li>As per the budget 2018-19,every block with more than 50%\n Scheduled tribe population and at least 20,000 tribal persons will have an\n Eklavya Model Residential School by the year 2022.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/tamil-nadu-ranks-lowest-in-coverage-of-iodised-salt\/article29376941.ece\"><strong>Tamil\nNadu ranks lowest in coverage of iodised salt<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong>The\nnational survey to measure the coverage of iodized salt has been released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The survey was conducted by Nutrition International in\n collaboration with the AIIMS and the Indian Coalition for the Control of\n Iodine Deficiency Disorders(ICCIDD).<\/li><li>The survey tested the iodine content in samples of cooking salt\n from households to estimate the coverage of iodised salt in 29 States and\n 7 Union Territories in India.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Findings of the survey:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The survey has found that the national average for household\n coverage is 76.3% which means 76.3% of Indian households consumed\n adequately iodised salt which is salt with at least 15 parts per million\n of iodine.<\/li><li>The five worst performers were Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh,\n Rajasthan, Odisha and Jharkhand.<\/li><li>The north-eastern States are doing very well with respect to\n iodised salt consumption at the household level because of the distance\n they have from the three salt producing states.<\/li><li>Further, Gujarat produces 71% of salt in the country followed\n by Rajasthan at 17% and Tamil Nadu at 11%.The rest of the country accounts\n for a mere 1% of salt produced.<\/li><li>The survey also revealed that 13 out of 36 States have already\n achieved Universal Salt Iodisation or have 90% of households with access\n to adequately iodised salt.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recommendations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The study has recommended to sustain the momentum so that\n iodine coverage does not fall below current levels.<\/li><li>It has also recommended that the States and the Centre need to\n work together to address the current gaps and look into issues that vary\n from one state to another, in order to produce adequately iodized salt.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional information:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Iodine:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Iodine is a vital micro-nutrient for optimal mental and\n physical development of human beings.<\/li><li>The deficiency of iodine can result in a range of disabilities\n and disorders such as goitre, hypothyroidism, cretinism, abortion, still\n births, mental retardation and psychomotor defects.<\/li><li>India made fortification of salt with iodine mandatory for\n direct human consumption in 1992.
