India\u2019s\nrelations with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman and other countries in the\nregion are on a strong footing.<\/li><li>Putting the past with United States, the\ngovernmnet forged an extra close relations with the Barak Obama administration\nthat opened a new chapter in Indo-Pacific policy.<\/li><li>The friendship with US continued even\nafter the change in power regime in US. The\n&#8220;Howdy, Modi!&#8221; event held in september 2019 was billed as one of the\nlargest ever receptions of a foreign leader in the US.<\/li><li>Despite domestic sentiments against\nChina, the government built a one of its kind infomal summit with China. Modi\u2019s\nvisit to China in 2018 followed by Xi Jinping visit to India in 2019 brings the\ntwo country closer.<\/li><li>After completing the Land Boundary Agreement,\nIndia and Bangladesh had worked hard on building connectivity, opening energy\nroutes, trade and developing travel links.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Effects\nof recent events on the diplomatic relation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The UN High Commission has also\ncriticised the law by calling it \u201cfundamentally discriminatory\u201d and appears to\n\u201cundermine the commitment to equality\u201d.<\/li><li>Turkey in the West and Malaysia in East\nAsia are the only two prominent Islamic countries to have spoken out against\nIndia on Kashmir.<\/li><li>While Bangladesh and Malaysia have\nopenly criticised the CAA, other countries like the USA, UK, France and\nAustralia have issued travel advisories.<\/li><li><strong>Bangladesh:<\/strong><\/li><li>Bangladeshi\nForeign Minister A K Abdul Momen and Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan called off\ntheir visits to India following enactment of the controversial law.<\/li><li>Bangladesh\nquestions about CAA that \u201cIf India\u2019s motivation was compassion for the\nreligiously persecuted, then why was the Modi governmnet so impervious to Ms.\nHasina\u2019s repeated requests for help in the Rohingya\u2019s refugee issue?\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Japan:<\/strong><\/li><li>The\nbiggest immediate let-down from a global image perspective was the cancellation\nof Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe\u2019s visit. <\/li><li>This\nwas no ordinary visit, but one replete with political symbolism anchored in\nIndia\u2019s North-East, right next China\u2019s zone of influence in East Asia. <\/li><li>In\nfact, it was worked out in a way that Abe undertakes the India visit before he\nheads for China later in December<\/li><li><strong>US:<\/strong><\/li><li>The\nDemocratic Party, under Barak Obama have been very supportive to the Indian\nGovernment. However, there were only three lawmakers from Democratic Party were\npresent out of two dozen lawmakers at the \u201cHowdi Modi\u201d event. <\/li><li>Even\nout of five Indian-American lawmakers, only one attended the event.<\/li><li>In\nweeks that followed the \u201cHowdy Modi\u201d event, the State departments and several\nbipartisan committees have issued statements of concerns over continued\ndetentions in Kashmir and the CAA. They held hearings in the US Congress and\neven inserted language on Kashmir into the annual Foreign Appropriations Act\nfor 2020.<\/li><li><strong>Europe:<\/strong><\/li><li>In\nthe European Parliament, last september, there were also discussions on\nKashmir. <\/li><li>It\nwas followed by Indian government\u2019s invitation to the far-right Members of the\nEuropean Parliament (MEPs) to visit Kashmir (October 2019) has annoyed Eorpean\ndiplomats from various countries who have been denied similar access.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\ncan follow?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The United Nations and its affiliated\nbodies could provide a platform for India to be targeted. For instance, in\nDecember 2019, a suit by a relatively remote player, the Gambia, ensured that\nMyanmar\u2019s top leadership was made to appear for a public hearing at the\nInternational Court of Justice at The Hague in connection with the Rohingya\nissue.<\/li><li>New Delhi\u2019s breaking ties with Turkey\nand Malaysia for their comments at the UN on Kashmir could also lead to them\nvetoing India\u2019s legitimate position at the Financial Action Task Force (FATF),\nwhere India hopes to blacklist Pakistan for terror financing.<\/li><li>The US congress can effectively block\ndefence sales to India or pursue sanctions on the S-400 missile system purchase\nfrom Russia.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"425\" height=\"285\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogadmin.forumias.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/1-1.jpg?resize=425%2C285&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Text Box: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is the second largest inter-governmental organisation after the United Nations, with the membership of 57 states, covering four continents. To date, he remains the only individual world wide\nsanctioned under the US\u2019s International Religious Freedom Act of 1998.<\/li><li>Bangladesh has been defending India at\nthe Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. If Bangladesh feels India\u2019s actions to\nbe religiously discriminatory, then it is just a matter of time that the other\nIslamic countries, specially Arab countries may speak up against the Indian\ngovernment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India has\nreached out to countries across all geographical regions to share its\nperspective on the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of\nCitizens, and emphasised that they are internal matters. Ministry of External\nAffairs have adopted a two-pronged strategy, as apart from reaching out to a\nnumber of resident ambassadors and high commissioners based here, Indian envoys\nabroad engaged with capitals in different countries.
