Council seats are allocated to the five\nregional groups as follows:&nbsp; <ul><li>African States: 13 seats; <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Asia-Pacific States: 13 seats; <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Eastern European States: 6\nseats; <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Latin American and Caribbean\nStates: 8 seats <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Western European and other\nStates: 7 seats.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pib.gov.in\/PressReleseDetail.aspx?PRID=1595664\">India calls for\nSpeedier Expansion of International Solar Alliance<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> India has called upon more countries to join the International\nSolar Alliance (ISA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About\nInternational Solar Alliance (ISA)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>ISA is partnership of solar\nresource rich countries. It seeks to address their special energy needs and\nprovide a platform to collaborate on development of solar energy resource. It\nis registered as an intergovernmental body under Article 102 of the UN Charter.<\/li><li>It was jointly launched by the\nPrime Minister of India and the President of France in 2015 at UNFCCC CoP 21\nParis, France. It is headquartered in India. It has its Secretariat located in\nthe campus of National Institute of Solar Energy, Gurgaon, Haryana<\/li><li><strong>Members:<\/strong> The ISA is open to 121\ncountries, most of them located between the Tropics of Cancer and\nCapricorn.&nbsp;So far, 84 countries have signed the ISA agreement.<\/li><li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> To create a collaborative platform\nfor increased deployment of solar energy technologies. This would enhance\nenergy security &amp; sustainable development and ensure equitable access to\nenergy.<\/li><li>The ISA is in accordance to <strong>Sustainable Development Goal 7<\/strong>. SDG 7\ncalls to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy\nfor all.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Promote solar technologies and investment in the solar sector\n to enhance income generation for the poor and global environment<\/li><li>Formulate projects and programmes to promote solar applications<\/li><li>Develop innovative Financial Mechanisms to reduce cost of\n capital<\/li><li>Build a common Knowledge e-Portal for sharing of policy\n development experiences and best practices in member countries<\/li><li>Facilitate capacity building for promotion and absorption of\n solar technologies and R&amp;D among member countries<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Target:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The ISA has set a target of 1\nTW of solar energy by 2030, which would require $1 trillion to achieve.<\/li><li>India has set a target of 175\nGW of renewable energy capacity by 2022, which includes 100 GW of solar energy.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/india-up-one-rank-in-un-development-index\/article30259959.ece\">India\nup one rank in UN development index<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) released Human\nDevelopment Index 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key\ntakeaways:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Norway ranked first in HDI\n2019, followed by Switzerland and Ireland.<\/li><li>India ranked 129 out of 189\ncountries&nbsp;in 2019. HDI value was 0.647. India had ranked 130 in 2018.<\/li><li>Among India&#8217;s neighbours, Sri\nLanka ranked 71, China ranked 85. Bhutan Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and\nAfghanistan were ranked lower than India.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional\nInformation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About\nHDI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It measures the average\nachievements in a country in three basic dimensions of human development: <\/li><li>A long and healthy life-\nmeasured by Life expectancy at birth<\/li><li>Access to knowledge: measured\nby Mean years of schooling and Expected years of schooling <\/li><li>Decent standard of living-\nmeasured by Gross National Income (GNI) per capita (PPP US$).<\/li><li>These dimensions are derived\nfrom the notion of human capabilities as proposed by Amartya Sen<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pakistani economist Mahbub ul\nHaq created HDI in 1990.
