She is best known for being one of the first practising women doctors in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">colonial India<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as well as being involved in a landmark legal case involving her marriage as a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">child bride<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0between 1884 and 1888.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She was married off at the young age of eleven with\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dadaji\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bhikaji<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who was nineteen years old. She stayed at her parent\u2019s house\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0she educat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0herself under the guidance of her stepfather.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1885, after 12 years of marriage,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bhikaji<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0filed a petition in the court and sought \u201crestitution of conjugal rights\u201d.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rakhmabai<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Defense<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Committee<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was formed by\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Behramji Malabari and Pandita\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ramabai<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in her defence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The case continued for 4 years until Dadaji was compensated in 1888, outside of court.
