Dr.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Rukhmabai<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(1864 \u20131955)\u00a0<\/span><\/b>was an\u00a0<\/span>Indian<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>physician<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>feminist<\/span>. She is best known for being one of the first practising women doctors in <\/span>colonial India<\/span>\u00a0as well as being involved in a landmark legal case involving her marriage as a\u00a0<\/span>child bride<\/span>\u00a0between 1884 and 1888.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She was married off at the young age of eleven with\u00a0<\/span>Dadaji\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Bhikaji<\/span><\/b>, who was nineteen years old. She stayed at her parent\u2019s house\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0she educat<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0herself under the guidance of her stepfather.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In 1885, after 12 years of marriage,\u00a0<\/span>Bhikaji<\/span>\u00a0filed a petition in the court and sought \u201crestitution of conjugal rights\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rakhmabai<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Defense<\/span>\u00a0Committee<\/span>\u00a0was formed by\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Behramji Malabari and Pandita\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Ramabai<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>in her defence<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The case continued for 4 years until Dadaji was compensated in 1888, outside of court.
