{"id":66684,"date":"2020-10-16T20:48:30","date_gmt":"2020-10-16T15:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=66684"},"modified":"2020-10-17T11:51:40","modified_gmt":"2020-10-17T06:21:40","slug":"quality-issues-in-higher-education-system-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/quality-issues-in-higher-education-system-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Quality issues in higher education system in India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/opinion\/columns\/delhi-university-cut-off-list-college-admissions-6745641\/\">The Indian Express<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Syllabus:<\/strong> GS-2- Education<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Context: <\/strong>Delhi University\u2019s high cut-offs in admissions is not a reflection of standards as there is no connection between one\u2019s intellectual ability and performance in examinations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment on the current education system.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rote learning and exaggerated marks<\/strong> point out the lack of pedagogic imagination and show a highly mechanised process of entering the higher education.<\/li>\n<li><strong>This trend for<\/strong> <strong>marks converts a learner into a smart consumer <\/strong>and the only skill she\/he acquires is the ability to memorise associated bullet points as emphasised by exam-oriented teachers and coaching centre gurus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The path of success is causing the stigma of failure<\/strong> as the \u201cfact-centric\u201d\/\u201cobjective\u201d\/short questions become the new normal, it becomes very difficult not to get at least 80 per cent in the board examination.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social Darwinism(Survival of the fittest) is normalised <\/strong>and hyper-competitiveness becomes the philosophy of the age as schools become highly-oppressive institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Do the students find enough guidance?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Young students hardly find any guidance as they choose their subjects and enter colleges.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic disciplines are ranked through the market rationality and <strong>young students are regularly pressured by the anxiety-ridden parents.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>They are driven by the peer culture, as a result,<\/strong>\u00a0they tend to prefer \u201cprestigious\u201d subjects like Physics, Economics, Commerce, English literature and Psychology, even if they are not naturally inclined to these subjects.<\/li>\n<li>colleges and universities are hierarchized due to the ranking system. The students select the college keeping in mind the <strong>\u201cbrand consciousness\u201d instead of the subject of their liking.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Way forward<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We should acquire the courage to accept that one\u2019s curiosity, aptitude and awakened intelligence cannot be measured through a pattern of examination that compels one to be a robotic performer rather than a creative wanderer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The Indian Express Syllabus: GS-2- Education Context: Delhi University\u2019s high cut-offs in admissions is not a reflection of standards as there is no connection between one\u2019s intellectual ability and performance in examinations.
