It is calculated on the basis of\u00a0four indicators-<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Undernourishment: <\/strong>Share of the population with\u00a0insufficient caloric intake.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Child Wasting: <\/strong>Share of children under age five who have low weight for their height, reflecting acute undernutrition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Child Stunting: <\/strong>Share of children under age five who have low height for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Child Mortality: <\/strong>The mortality rate of children\u00a0under the age of five.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What are the key findings of the index?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The country\u2019s score of 27.2 is the worst among BRICS countries, and inferior to Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s child wasting rate was extremely high at 20.8% \u2013 the highest.<\/li>\n<li>The child stunting rate in India was 37.4 %,<\/li>\n<li>The child wasting was at 17.3 %.<\/li>\n<li>The undernourishment rate of India was at 14% and child mortality at 3.7 %.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are the reasons for low scores and its possible solution?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The\u00a0national policy- <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Has no appetite for a radical transformation in the delivery of adequate nutrition especially to women and children.<\/li>\n<li>Has paid inadequate attention to achieving diet diversity through the PDS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Inequality- <\/strong>There is huge inequality because the fruits of growth are enjoyed by selected sections of society.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Stunting prevalence is 10.1% higher in rural areas compared to urban areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Anaemia-<\/strong> One in two women of reproductive age is anaemic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>COVID-19- <\/strong>The COVID-19 pandemic\u00a0and the\u00a0resulting economic downturn are\u00a0exacerbating food and nutrition insecurity\u00a0for millions of people.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Possible solution-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Diverse diet-<\/strong> Nourishment through a diverse diet that includes fat, protein and micronutrients.<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening the Public distribution system, with a focus on women\u2019s health, would lead to healthier pregnancies, and stronger supplemental nutrition under the ICDS scheme would give children a better chance at all-round development.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Way forward-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Food should be priced not only by its weight or volume but also by its nutrient density,\u00a0its freedom from contamination, and its contribution to ecosystem services and social justice.<\/li>\n<li>The benefits can reach more people if the government spends more to improve public education, health care, nutrition, social security and gender empowerment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source- The Hindu Syllabus- GS 2- Issues relating to poverty and hunger.
