{"id":67266,"date":"2020-10-24T17:18:35","date_gmt":"2020-10-24T11:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=67266"},"modified":"2021-01-07T14:54:25","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T09:24:25","slug":"indias-un-journey-and-its-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-un-journey-and-its-role\/","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s UN journey and its role"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>What are the different phases of India\u2019s journey in UN?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Phase 1- Before the end of the Cold War in 1989-<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The Indian leadership learned that the UN could not be relied upon to impartially resolve vital security disputes.<\/li>\n<li>The UN only to focus on common causes such as anti-colonialism, anti-racism, nuclear disarmament, environment conservation and equitable economic development.<\/li>\n<li>In 1988- India claims the moral high ground by proposing, three-phase plan to eliminate nuclear weapons from the surface of earth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Phase 2- The demanding decade from 1990-2000-<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>There was <strong>a change in India\u2019s foreign policy<\/strong> which was reflected in voting patterns at the UN.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For example<\/strong>&#8211; India showed pragmatism in enabling the toughest terms on Iraq even after eviction from occupied Kuwait, or in reversing the hitherto stated position on Zionism as racism<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India\u2019s diplomatic difficulties were exposed when it suffered a <strong>humiliating defeat in the hands of Japan in the 1996 contest for a non-permanent seat in the UNSC.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India stood against indefinite extension of the <strong>Non-Proliferation Treaty<\/strong> in 1995, and rejected the backdoor introduction for adoption of the <strong>Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty<\/strong> in 1996.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Phase 3- Wind of changes \u2013 21st century.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India strengthened its profile-<\/strong> The economic liberalization and globalization policies, helped India to strengthening its profile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>The reliable and substantial troop contributions to several peacekeeping operations in African conflict theatres.<\/li>\n<li>India has emerged as a responsible stakeholder in non-traditional security issue areas such as the spread of small and light weapons, the threat of non-state actors acquiring weapons of mass destruction, and the impact of climate change.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What will be the role of India as a non-permanent UNSC member?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s areas of priority will continue to be-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The upholding of Charter principles in the backdrop of a turbulent world..<\/li>\n<li>Mounting effective punitive measures against those who support, finance and sponsor terrorists.<\/li>\n<li>Striving for securing due say to the troop contributing countries in the management of peace operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Challenge for India- <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In the midst of multilateralism and, and China\u2019s aggressive territorial forays India may face challenges and opportunities in the UNSC.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Voting scenario<\/strong>&#8211; China might succeeding in convening a formal meeting on Kashmir, India may have to choose either to abstain in the vote since it is a party to the dispute or vote against any unfavorable proposal that might be tabled.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The growing proximity with the US may prompt India not to stay neutral in order to counter balance China.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Way forward-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India\u2019s future role will probably depend on its ability to weather the impact of the multiple crises it now faces on account of an unabated economic slowdown and a troubled relationship with China.<br \/>\n<strong>Read also:-<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"bas2Smb7t9\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-un-journey-and-its-role\/\">India\u2019s UN journey and its role<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;India\u2019s UN journey and its role&#8221; &#8212; Free UPSC IAS Preparation For Aspirants\" src=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-un-journey-and-its-role\/embed\/#?secret=eKwiNvEKcn#?secret=bas2Smb7t9\" data-secret=\"bas2Smb7t9\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are the different phases of India\u2019s journey in UN?
