Heat and cool their houses. People cook food. All those activities take energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table width=\"558\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"558\">Burning coal, oil, and gas to generate energy ? Burning these things emit gases into the air. The gases cause the air to heat up. This can change the climate of a place<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<ul>\n<li>In its <strong>5th Assessment Report<\/strong>, the <strong>Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change<\/strong>, a group of 1,300 independent scientific experts from countries all over the world under the auspices of the United Nations, concluded that there&#8217;s a better than 95 percent probability that human-produced greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide have caused much of the observed increase in Earth&#8217;s temperatures over the past 50 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other causes:<\/strong> Deforestation, changes in land use, soil erosion and agriculture (including livestock), the Industrial revolution, and Mining and Quarrying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Climate Forcing:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>There are a number of natural mechanisms that can upset the global energy balance, for example, <strong>fluctuations in the Earth&#8217;s orbit<\/strong>, <strong>variations in ocean circulation,<\/strong> and <strong>changes in the composition of the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>By altering the global energy balance, such mechanisms &#8220;force&#8221; the climate to change. Consequently, scientists call them &#8220;climate forcing&#8221; mechanisms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate <\/strong><strong>\u2018<\/strong><strong>forcing<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong> are factors in the climate that either increase or decrease the effects to the climate system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Positive <\/strong><strong>\u2018<\/strong><strong>forcing<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong> such as greenhouse gases warm the earth while the <strong>negative <\/strong><strong>\u2018<\/strong><strong>forcing<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong>such as the volcanic eruptions, etc. cools the earth system.<\/li>\n<li>Examples of forcing include:\n<ol>\n<li>Surface reflectivity (albedo)<\/li>\n<li>Human induced changes in greenhouse gases<\/li>\n<li>Atmospheric aerosols (volcanic sulfates, industrial output)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>These examples influence the balance of energy entering and leaving the Earth system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Burning of fossil fuels: People drive cars.
