{"id":68912,"date":"2020-11-07T17:28:32","date_gmt":"2020-11-07T11:58:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=68912"},"modified":"2021-05-17T12:47:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T07:17:44","slug":"the-indo-pacific-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-indo-pacific-journey\/","title":{"rendered":"The Indo-Pacific journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"LC20lb DKV0Md\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Rise of the <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/answered-maritime-security-and-connectivity-in-indo-pacific-region-are-the-priority-areas-that-need-to-be-focused-for-indias-economic-growth-and-sustainable-development-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indo-Pacific<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context: <\/strong>The\u00a0Indo-Pacific region is crucial in Indian foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do we geographically place the Indo-Pacific?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India has used \u2018indo-pacific\u2019 in joint statements\u00a0<\/strong>with a series of partner countries, including the United States, Australia, France, Indonesia, Japan, and of course the United Kingdom.<\/li>\n<li>The Ministry has recently set up an\u00a0<strong>Indo-Pacific Division as well as an Oceania Division<\/strong>, and placed them under the same Additional Secretary level officer. This is a sign of India\u2019s commitment to this critical geography.<\/li>\n<li><strong>For India, the Indo-Pacific is that vast maritime space\u00a0<\/strong>stretching from the western coast of North America to the eastern shores of Africa.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s great religious traditions, such\u00a0<strong>as Buddhism, spread far and wide in the Indo-Pacific.<\/strong>\u00a0Some of the oldest and most impressive Hindu temples are found in Vietnam, remnants of the Cham kingdom.<\/li>\n<li>A thousand years ago India\u2019s greatest coastal empire, the Cholas, sent maritime expeditions and trading ships as far east as Sumatra, ancient China, and Abbasid empire in what is today Iraq.<\/li>\n<li>Sea-borne trade with Africa and with the Gulf states have been constants of Indian economic life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How has India strived to utilise the geo-strategic potential of Indo-Pacific?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Indo-Pacific ocean system carries an estimated 65 per cent of world trade<\/strong>\u00a0and contributes 60 per cent of global GDP. Ninety per cent of India\u2019s international trade travels on its waters.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s Indo-Pacific strategy was spoken by Prime Minister in a speech in Singapore in 2018\u00a0<strong>as the SAGAR doctrine (Security and Growth for All in the Region)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India plans to support the building of a\u00a0<strong>rules-based regional architecture resting<\/strong>\u00a0on seven pillars. These are:<\/li>\n<li>Maritime security<\/li>\n<li>Maritime ecology<\/li>\n<li>Maritime resources<\/li>\n<li>Capacity building and resource sharing<\/li>\n<li>Disaster risk reduction and management<\/li>\n<li>Science, technology and academic cooperation<\/li>\n<li>Trade connectivity and maritime transport<\/li>\n<li>We have wanted to\u00a0<strong>strengthen security and freedom of navigation<\/strong>\u00a0in the Indo-Pacific by becoming a net security provider.\n<ul>\n<li>For instance, in peacekeeping efforts or anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden .<\/li>\n<li>In the past six years, India has provided coastal surveillance radar systems to Mauritius, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Myanmar and Bangladesh.<\/li>\n<li>All of these countries also use Indian patrol boats, as do Mozambique and Tanzania.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Defence training programmes have increased<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Mobile training teams have been deputed to 11 countries from Vietnam to South Africa, as well as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar in our immediate neighbourhood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Indian Navy\u2019s Information Fusion Centre<\/strong>\u00a0for the Indian Ocean Region has enhanced maritime domain awareness among partner countries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>HADR missions in the Indo-Pacific<\/strong>\u00a0in recent years have included Operation Rahat in Yemen in 2015; when India rescued and evacuated 6,710 persons, including 1,947 citizens of over 40 other countries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI),<\/strong>\u00a0co-founded by India and the United Kingdom in 2019. CDRI is key to India\u2019s regional and global commitment to taking on climate change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India has also promoted and contributed to infrastructure,<\/strong>\u00a0connectivity, economic projects and supply chains in the region, always prioritising the needs of the host community and the ethic of equity, environmental sustainability and social viability.<\/li>\n<li><strong>International partnerships:\u00a0<\/strong>India has\u00a0<strong>created partnerships and mechanisms with countries<\/strong>\u00a0the opportunities, concerns and stakes of which intersect with ours.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Networks such as Quad, with India, the United States,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Japan and Australia\u00a0<\/strong>as participants, and the India-Japan-US, India-France-Australia and India-Indonesia-Australia trilateral arrangements offer cases in point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Way forward<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UK\u2019 has characteristic wisdom and prodigious institutional memory, we hope too that the UK\u2019s strategy will approximate India\u2019s own and long-standing Indo-Pacific vision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Rise of the Indo-Pacific Context: The\u00a0Indo-Pacific region is crucial in Indian foreign policy.
