{"id":69692,"date":"2020-11-17T18:13:56","date_gmt":"2020-11-17T12:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=69692"},"modified":"2021-05-17T11:22:21","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T05:52:21","slug":"rcep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/rcep\/","title":{"rendered":"RCEP |Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Context<\/strong>: India\u2019s opting out of <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-exits-rcep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RCEP<\/a> appears more debatable in terms of its economic rationale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/rcep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership<\/a> (RCEP) was signed on 15.11.2020 by 15 countries led by China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and the 10-state ASEAN grouping.<\/li>\n<li>It created one of the world\u2019s largest trading blocs.<\/li>\n<li>India after seven years of protracted negotiations decided last November to exit the grouping.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why India opted out of RCEP?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India had justified its decision on following grounds:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>High trade deficit<\/strong>: Protecting its economy from burgeoning trade deficits with a majority of the 15 RCEP members.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lack of safeguards<\/strong>: It had cited the grouping\u2019s refusal to accede to its requests on safeguards as a deal breaker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are the significances of RCEP?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RCEP members now account for about 30% of the global GDP and a third of the world\u2019s population.<\/li>\n<li>The timing of the accord presents a unique opportunity to support economic recovery, inclusive development and job creation.<\/li>\n<li>It will help in strengthening regional supply chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why India should have joined the RCEP?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Impact of the pandemic<\/strong>: Global trade and the economy are falling due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lack of markets:<\/strong>\u00a0New infections in Europe and the U.S. might prompt fresh restrictions leading to shrinkage of export markets for India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uncertain Global order<\/strong>: There is heightened tariff uncertainty generated by the deadlocked Brexit negotiations between Britain and the E.U. which will also impact India\u2019s trade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>But, RCEP economies are re-energising economic activity<\/strong>: The east Asian and Pacific countries including China, South Korea, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand having contained the pandemic successfully and have restarted their economies.
