{"id":70130,"date":"2020-11-19T17:29:51","date_gmt":"2020-11-19T11:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=70130"},"modified":"2021-05-10T18:42:52","modified_gmt":"2021-05-10T13:12:52","slug":"urbanisation-and-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/urbanisation-and-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Urbanisation and pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Context<\/strong>: Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s call for a reimagining of urban planning and development to make cities and towns healthy and liveable after COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More on news:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PM emphasised resetting the mindset, processes and practices for safe urban living, and acknowledged that governments actually do little for the working millions at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Discuss the spread of pandemic in urban areas and associated issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Spread of pandemic<\/strong>: The top 10 cities affected worldwide accounted for 15% of the total cases, and data for populous Indian cities later showed large spikes that radiated into smaller towns.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reason for the spread<\/strong>: Rapid transmission in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai was the unavoidable outcome of densification and an inability to practise distancing norms.<\/li>\n<li>In Dharavi, which has one of the world\u2019s highest slum densities, epidemiologists point an apparently low viral impact to screening and herd immunity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social impact:\u00a0<\/strong>The pandemic\u2019s full social impact, especially among the poorer people has not been adequately measured here or elsewhere.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Housing:<\/strong>\u00a0Good and affordable housing is the basis of a sustainable and healthy city.<\/li>\n<li>Well-designed rental housing that is the key to protecting migrant labour and other less affluent sections remains poorly funded.<\/li>\n<li>Mumbai is estimated to have added only 5% of rental housing in new residential construction (1961-2000), and that too led by private funding.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enforcement of laws:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Laws on air pollution, municipal solid waste management and water quality are hardly enforced, and tokenism marks the approach to urban mobility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What can be done?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Schemes:<\/strong>\u00a0An opportunity to make schemes such as the Centre\u2019s Affordable Rental Housing Complexes deliver at large scale and focus on new good houses built by the state.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Demand and supply:<\/strong>\u00a0The Ministry of Housing could work by digitally combining and transparently publishing data on demand and supply for each city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Learning from the past:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Past menaces such as cholera, the plague and the global flu pandemic a century ago led to change such as sewerage, waste handling, social housing and health care that reduced disease.\u00a0Something on the same lines should be done about the pandemic.<\/li>\n<li>Government should show the political will to reinvent cities after the pandemic is over.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/society-news\/urbanisation-news-and-updates\/<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Context: Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s call for a reimagining of urban planning and development to make cities and towns healthy and liveable after COVID-19.
