{"id":71002,"date":"2020-11-26T17:26:29","date_gmt":"2020-11-26T11:56:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=71002"},"modified":"2021-05-10T16:26:05","modified_gmt":"2021-05-10T10:56:05","slug":"central-trade-unions-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/central-trade-unions-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"Central Trade Unions strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Context-<\/strong>\u00a0Trade unions called for nationwide strike to protest government policies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Central Trade Union (CTUs) have\u00a0called for a nation-wide strike\u00a0and what are the demands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/central-trade-unions-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Central Trade unions<\/a> called for national wide strike to protest against anti-farmer laws, anti-worker labour codes, privatization of public sector and the corporatization policies of the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trade union\u2019s demands-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The demands of the joint platform include cash transfer of Rs 7,500 per month for all non-income tax paying families and 10 kilograms free ration per person per month to all needy people.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expansion of MGNREGA<\/strong>, the rural employment guarantee scheme, to provide 200 days\u2019 work in a year in rural areas at enhanced wages and also extension of the employment guarantee to urban areas.<\/li>\n<li>Withdrawal of the \u201cdraconian circular on forced premature retirement of government and PSU employees\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pension to all<\/strong>\u2013 scrapping NPS (National\u00a0Pension System) and restoration of earlier pension with improvement in Employees\u2019 Pension Scheme 1995 [EPS-95].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are the key concerns with new labour codes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Against the Interests of Employees-<\/strong>\u00a0The codes provide the liberty to industrial establishments to\u00a0hire and fire their employees at will.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The new labour codes dilute workers\u2019 rights in favour of employers\u2019 rights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Inspection system has been diluted in the Wage Code.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What are the other options that trade union have to dilute this resolution?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trade unions have six options-<\/p>\n<p>However,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Central government did not conduct an effective and sustaining social dialogue and at the State level, social dialogue institutions are largely absent or weak.<\/li>\n<li>The new Labour codes ignore the recommendations of Parliamentary Standing committee.<\/li>\n<li>And the labour reforms bills passed in the absence of the Opposition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>International Labour Organization\u2019s intervention<\/strong>\u2013 Trade union did wrote to ILO, seeking its intervention to protect worker\u2019s rights but the ILO\u2019s intervention only provide provided a temporary respite to trade unions as the government did what it has been doing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Way forward-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Approaching the judiciary-<\/strong>\u00a0Trade unions must shed their judicio-phobia and approach to judiciary provided they have strong legal grounds to challenge reforms introduced by Central or State governments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strike alone will not make much difference<\/strong>\u2013 Trade unions must explore other avenues such as seeking the ILO\u2019s intervention, judicial action and social dialogue<\/li>\n<li>This strike is a reminder of this potential, positive reconstruction of laws.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Context-\u00a0Trade unions called for nationwide strike to protest government policies.
