\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><b>High Domestic demand<\/b><\/strong>: India is home to 25 per cent of world\u2019s children aged between 0 and 12 years.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Inherent capacity<\/b><\/strong>: India possess a rich history and culture in the field of toy making.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Economic value<\/b><\/strong>: India\u2019s share in the global toy is just 0.5 per cent ($500 million) whereas real market, estimation stood at $90 billion.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Reduce import dependence<\/b><\/strong>: 80 per cent of the toys sold in India are imported from China.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Labour intensive:<\/b><\/strong>It offers large-scale employment to semi-skilled\/unskilled workers and, especially, women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Challenges in Toy making Industry<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Seasonal<\/b><\/strong>: Shelf life of a toy is limited.\u00a0<strong><b>For example<\/b><\/strong>, a Transformer Toy sells good during the movie releases and slows down soon thereafter.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Inflexible Labour laws<\/b><\/strong>: Indian laws do not permit recruitment or retrenchment based on demand thereby reducing the potential of the firms to grow big.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Small firms<\/b><\/strong>: Hamper the advantage of economies of scale make it less attractive in market.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Shying away by big players:\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>Unfriendly business laws prevented large corporate player to emerge in the sector.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Inefficient supply chain:\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>Owing to fragmented nature of the sector.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Input Dependence:<\/b><\/strong>Every time a new toy is to be made it needs different tooling but tooling in India is costly leading to over dependence on China.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>Way forward:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Flexible labour laws<\/b><\/strong>: Government should allow companies to hire and retrench employees based on demand and to protect workers the government can fix minimum wages.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Labour pooling:<\/b><\/strong>It can allow women to work at night with adequate safeguards.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Leveraging technology<\/b><\/strong>: The domestic toy sector needs to tap into India\u2019s expertise in information technology to offer games that capture the imagination of the children.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Ensure quality<\/b><\/strong>: A large-scale skilling programme is key to ensure of global quality<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Branding:<\/b><\/strong>Producing toys in an eco-friendly manner will help Indian toy making industries to command a premium for their toys<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The \u20b95,000-crore\u00a0<strong><b>toy cluster at Koppal<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0in Karnataka is a step in the right direction.
