{"id":71114,"date":"2020-11-27T18:14:20","date_gmt":"2020-11-27T12:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=71114"},"modified":"2021-05-10T16:02:36","modified_gmt":"2021-05-10T10:32:36","slug":"ayush-and-ayurveda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ayush-and-ayurveda\/","title":{"rendered":"Ayush and Ayurveda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Context:\u00a0<\/strong>Recently, the Indian Medical systems of Ayurveda, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Unani Medicine have identified surgical procedures that can be performed by postgraduate Ayurvedic doctors in Shalya (surgery).<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the history of Ayurveda and Allopathic practices in India?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>After Independence<\/strong>: The Indian state was faced with the difficult task of accommodating both the ascendant modern medicine brought in by the British and India\u2019s traditional systems of medicine, notably Ayurveda.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Options:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>One was to take the best from all systems and integrate them into one cohesive science. This was possible but not easy as the systems had certain incompatible approaches.<\/li>\n<li>For a brief period there actually existed \u2018integrated\u2019 courses, wherein both Ayurveda and Modern medicine were taught to students.<\/li>\n<li>These withered away partly due to opposition from purists in Ayurveda who were outraged by the \u2018dilution\u2019 of their science.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Discuss the issues associated with ayurvedic graduates.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ayurvedic graduates experienced an identity crisis:\u00a0<\/strong>Many of them had joined the course not for the love of Ayurveda but to get a degree with the honorific \u2018Dr.\u2019 which gave them upward mobility, social status and even value in the marriage market.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Their role:<\/strong>\u00a0They became resident doctors, intensive care duty doctors and operation theatre assistant surgeons.<\/li>\n<li>There is an instance of a homoeopathic graduate manning and training others on the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, a complex heart lung machine in the largest unit used for critically-ill COVID-19 patients.<\/li>\n<li>They work for less pay which allows hospitals to control costs and even make profits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The idea of Ayurvedic surgeons:<\/strong>\u00a0In an effort to develop postgraduate programmes, Ayurveda medical colleges developed one in \u201cShalya\u2019 or \u201csurgery\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>A procedure called \u2018Kshar Sutra\u2019 used for anal fistula was described in Ayurveda texts and has been incorporated in modern medicine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Procedures and complexities<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Indian Medicine Central Council (Post Graduate Ayurveda Education) Amendment Regulations, 2020:<\/strong>\u00a0It authorises an MS (Ayurveda) Shalya Tantra, or General Surgery postgraduate degree holder on completion of his course to perform 58 surgical procedures.<\/li>\n<li>Some of the procedures in the list are rather complicated. For example, removal of the gallbladder called cholecystectomy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What can be done?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Proper training<\/strong>: Ayurveda graduates including surgeons are a large workforce in search of an identity. If they are creatively and properly trained, they can play important roles in our health-care system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>IMA needs to be constructive:<\/strong>\u00a0AYUSH, or Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, is a priority area for the present government. The IMA in its opposition needs to be precise and constructive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Way forward<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Serious discussion about utilising India\u2019s large workforce of non MBBS doctors to improve access to decent health care for our ordinary citizens is required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Context:\u00a0Recently, the Indian Medical systems of Ayurveda, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Unani Medicine have identified surgical procedures that can be performed by postgraduate Ayurvedic doctors in Shalya (surgery).
