{"id":71215,"date":"2020-11-28T18:16:23","date_gmt":"2020-11-28T12:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=71215"},"modified":"2021-05-10T15:50:21","modified_gmt":"2021-05-10T10:20:21","slug":"post-truth-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/post-truth-politics\/","title":{"rendered":"Post Truth politics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0Untroubled by factuality and diversity, privilege and power are shaping public opinion in troubled democracies.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the relation between truth and politics?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cFactual truth\u201d<\/strong>: It is a\u00a0reference to observations by living subjects of constantly changing reality.\u00a0But factual truth was always prone to challenge as being no more than opinion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cFormal truths\u201d:<\/strong>\u00a0On the contrary,\u00a0it\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0part of the received wisdom, such as the proposition that two and two made four.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Truth and politics:<\/strong>\u00a0Both of them\u00a0had always been \u201con rather bad terms with each other\u201d and \u201ctruthfulness\u201d was never counted \u201camong the political virtues\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>This was a reality with a\u00a0deep\u00a0bearing on the practice of politics, since \u201cfacts and events\u201d, the outcome of the collective life of humanity, were the \u201cvery texture of the political\u00a0land\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>How is truth altered by deception?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Factuality:<\/strong>The lie in normal\u00a0circumstances\u00a0is \u201cdefeated by reality\u201d. However large the tissue of falsehood, even when\u00a0twisted\u00a0with the help of computers, it would be inadequate to \u201ccover the immensity of factuality\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Radical destruction:<\/strong>A fact could be removed from the world if a sufficient number of people believe in its non-existence.<\/li>\n<li>But this would require a process of\u00a0\u201cradical destruction\u201d, an experiment that totalitarian regimes had undertaken with frightening consequences, though without the intended result of \u201clasting deception\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What is the role of social media?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The role of social media<\/strong>:\u00a0Earlier modes of harvesting attention and securing assent for a particular perception of\u00a0reality\u00a0have been transformed in this intensely networked\u00a0situation.<\/li>\n<li>Since the events of 2016,\u00a0notably the United Kingdom\u2019s\u00a0Brexit\u00a0referendum and Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0election as the U.S. President,\u00a0social media has come in for intense scrutiny for its ability to create bubbles of political misinformation.<\/li>\n<li>The economist,\u00a0Raghuram\u00a0Rajan, and the philosopher, Michael\u00a0Sandel, have in recent times pointed out how daily lives in the U.S. today are increasingly about sameness, less about exposure to diversities of culture and social perception.<\/li>\n<li>It is a context that enables particular population\u00a0units\u00a0to pretend that other worlds do not exist, that their perceptions, fortified in regular\u00a0\u201ccheck ins\u201d\u00a0with social media, are all that matter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Customary deliberative processes have been dispensed with<\/strong>: Parliament sessions conclude without the Question Hour and consultative meetings across party lines over significant legislative initiatives have been scrapped.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Way forward<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Public opinion in democracies is now fashioned within cocoons of privilege and power, untroubled by factuality or diversities in perception.
