{"id":71403,"date":"2020-12-01T11:24:31","date_gmt":"2020-12-01T05:54:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=71403"},"modified":"2021-05-08T17:27:39","modified_gmt":"2021-05-08T11:57:39","slug":"inequality-in-education-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/inequality-in-education-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Inequality in education system"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Context<\/strong>: Aishwarya Reddy\u2019s death points finger at an <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/inequality-in-education-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">education system<\/a> that turns a blind eye to inequality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recently a young student, Aishwarya Reddy from Lady Shri Ram College, died by suicide.<\/li>\n<li>The girl from a poor family took her life due to her inability to buy gadgets required by her to continue her online education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><strong>What factors that pushed her to choose death over life?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Digital divide in accessing online education.<\/li>\n<li>Delay in giving her the well-deserved scholarship on time by the Department of Science &amp; Technology\u2019s (DST).<\/li>\n<li>Lack of knowledge on part of the college administration about its students\u2019 socio-economic backgrounds because of which all students, except the freshers, were asked to leave the hostel premises.<\/li>\n<li>The girl\u2019s inability to proactively reach out to those in positions of authority for help.<\/li>\n<li>The painful experiences of the daily struggle of her parents, their inability, desperation and frustration to buy her a laptop and the guilt of pushing them to mortgage their house and forcing her younger sister to drop out of school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What is the most fundamental cause for such student\u2019s suicides?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>ours is an unequal society and our socio-economic and cultural locations determine the school that we go to and the nature\/quality of education that we get.<\/li>\n<li>So, most students find it difficult to come out of their vicious cycles of disadvantage, a few resilient ones manage to enter those elite institutions, to which there is limited access.<\/li>\n<li>Though they clear, the Children with different caste, class, religion and ethnicity, with unequal economic, social and cultural capital, are all treated alike.<\/li>\n<li>For example, syllabus, curricular resources, pedagogic processes, assessment practices are same for everyone, irrespective of the divergent spaces they come from.<\/li>\n<li>Though this seems to be equal and neutral is in effect unequal and biased.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>What is the way forward?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Institutions should take responsibility to make such spaces more democratic and egalitarian.<\/li>\n<li>They need to adopt more proactive measures to reach out to their students, especially those belonging to marginalised backgrounds.<\/li>\n<li>It is important to recognise that the pressures faced by students such as the pressure to do well academically, pressure to conform and look\/dress\/talk in a certain way, appreciate a particular kind of music\/film etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Context: Aishwarya Reddy\u2019s death points finger at an education system that turns a blind eye to inequality.
