{"id":75800,"date":"2021-01-07T18:23:11","date_gmt":"2021-01-07T12:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=75800"},"modified":"2021-03-01T15:11:18","modified_gmt":"2021-03-01T09:41:18","slug":"effect-of-air-pollution-on-pregnancy-loss-lancet-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/effect-of-air-pollution-on-pregnancy-loss-lancet-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Effect of air pollution on Pregnancy loss : Lancet study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:\u00a0<\/strong>Lancet has released a first of its kind study to estimate the effect of air pollution on pregnancy loss across the South Asia region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>About the Study:\u00a0<\/strong>The study combined data from household surveys on health from 1998-2016 (from women who reported at least one pregnancy loss and one or more live births) and estimated exposure to PM2.5 during pregnancy through combining satellite with atmospheric modelling outputs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Highlights of the Study:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Air Quality and Pregnancy Loss:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Poor air quality is associated with a considerable proportion of pregnancy loss in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.<\/li>\n<li>An estimated 349,681 pregnancy losses per year in South Asia were associated with exposure to PM2.5 concentrations that exceeded India\u2019s air quality standard (more than 40 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3) accounting for 7% of annual pregnancy loss in the region from 2000-2016.<\/li>\n<li>Gestational exposure to PM2.5 was also associated with an increased likelihood of pregnancy loss and this remained significant after adjusting for other factors.\n<ul>\n<li>Each increase in 10 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 was estimated to increase a mother\u2019s risk of pregnancy loss by 3%. The increase in risk was greater for mothers from rural areas or those who became pregnant at an older age, compared to younger mothers from urban areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How Air Quality Can Cause Pregnancy Loss?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The reason behind the air pollution to cause pregnancy loss is that the fine particles have been reported to cross the blood placenta barrier and\u00a0<strong>harm the embryo directly<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to poor air quality can cause disorders such as inflammation, oxidative stress and blood pressure elevation which can act as factors to increase the risk of pregnancy loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/south-asia-air-pollution-pregnancy-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Article Source<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News:\u00a0Lancet has released a first of its kind study to estimate the effect of air pollution on pregnancy loss across the South Asia region.
