It must analyze the issues of the system before its implementation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Remote Voting Project<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recently, the <strong>Chief Election Commissioner<\/strong>\u00a0 (Sunil Arora)\u00a0 announced that it is starting trials of a \u201c<strong>remote voting project<\/strong>\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>IIT-Madras is developing the system for the &#8220;<strong>Remote Voting Project<\/strong>&#8221; by using\u00a0 <strong>Blockchain technology<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The concept of remote voting became popular during the <strong>COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong> to address <strong>social distancing<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Read More<\/strong> &#8211; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/remote-voting-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Remote Voting Project<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>How voting technology developed over time?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since the beginning, EC has been facing challenges in ensuring a fair and just voting system for the country. Over the years, it has introduced many changes for that.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the initial phases, ECI\u00a0 used the &#8220;<strong>paper balloting<\/strong>&#8221; method to conduct elections in India.<\/li>\n<li>However, the &#8220;paper balloting&#8221; method was subjected to malpractices such as <strong>ballot stuffing<\/strong> and <strong>booth capturing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Due to this weakness, ECI introduced \u00a0<strong>Electronic Voting Machine in India (EVM). <\/strong>EVMs are able to stand intense scrutiny, because of their standalone<strong> single-chip device. This device is not connected to any network.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Recently,\u00a0 <strong>Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) are added to the <\/strong>EVMs. It enhanced the ability to verify the voting<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, ECI has started trials in the &#8220;<strong>Remote Voting Project<\/strong>&#8221; that uses blockchain technology. This system will definitely face the same level of scrutiny, that faced by EVMs.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>How blockchain-based voting system work?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This technology has been already in use for <strong>cryptocurrencies<\/strong>. It is used to record a list of transactions that can be used to find out who owns which bitcoins <strong>without any centralized authority<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The blockchain method uses an <strong>online public bulletin board<\/strong> that is public and available for anyone to read and verify.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The voting authority will have to authenticate this bulletin board.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Further, The <strong>public bulletin board <\/strong>allows for a <strong>linear ordering of data<\/strong> that ensures only a user can add data.<\/li>\n<li>This allows the users to sign in to the bulletin board using <strong>cryptographic signatures<\/strong>\u00a0to register their votes in a ledger.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>blockchain-based voting system <\/strong>with its cryptographic features, <strong>promises data security and verifiability.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>What are the issues in using a blockchain-based voting system?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The use of <strong>blockchain-based voting systems <\/strong>will depend upon a network. It will also face all the online vulnerabilities that devices are facing at present.<\/li>\n<li>Also, a\u00a0 recent draft paper by MIT and Harvard researchers pointed to serious vulnerabilities in the designs of a remote block-chain-based voting system.<\/li>\n<li>The research paper also claims that blockchains will introduce issues related to complexity and their management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ECI should be cautious before deploying this method in elections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The Hindu Gs3: Science and Technology- Developments and their Applications and Effects in Everyday Life.
