It uses the basic needs approach.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Indicators: <\/strong>This index uses 26 indicators on five dimensions of basic necessities\u2014 water, sanitation, housing, micro-environment, and other facilities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data Collection: <\/strong>The index has been created for all states based on data collected by the National Statistical Office(NSO) in 2012 and 2018.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Range: <\/strong>The index classifies areas on three levels of access \u2014 high, medium, low \u2014 to bare necessities.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The index has a range of 0 to 1 where 1 represents the best access to the basic necessities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Key Findings:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Richer vs Poorer States: <\/strong>The Poorer States have reduced the gap with rich States in providing access to the basics of daily life \u2014 housing, water, power, sanitation, cooking gas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inter-State disparity<\/strong> in access to the basic necessities has declined in 2018, when compared to 2012.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Performance of States<\/strong>: States such as Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat top the index.\u00a0 While eastern Indian States of Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Tripura have occupied the lowest positions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>States which showed significant improvement <\/strong>include Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Richer vs Poorer Households: <\/strong>The access to basic necessities has improved significantly for the poorest households when compared to the richest households.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The gap between Rural and Urban India:<\/strong> There is still a gap between urban and rural India as well as among income groups in access to basic necessities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Suggestions:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>There should be effective targeting of the government schemes<\/strong> for the poorer population in both urban or rural areas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There should be better Centre-State coordination with local governments<\/strong> as they are responsible for civic amenities in urban areas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The BNI could also be constructed at the district level<\/strong> using large annual household survey data to show progress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/business\/Economy\/improvement-in-access-to-bare-necessities-but-disparities-continue-economic-survey\/article33695827.ece\"><strong>The Hindu<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
