What are the lessons that India Should learn from this Pandemic?<\/p>\n<p><b>Introduction\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s first confirmed case of Sars-CoV-2 was reported exactly a year ago. Experts with the help of a modeling-based study predicted that the country could have hundreds of millions of cases and a few million deaths by July 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What were the challenges faced by people during the pandemic?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a sudden decrease in economic activities, low job opportunities, slowing of the economy. Impacts further worsened due to lockdowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most disturbing visuals that came from the pandemic was <\/span><b>the migrants walking back to their villages on the highways.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>People who tested positive for the virus and the frontline workers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were discriminated against in society.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>An excessive amount of unreliable information i.e. \u201cinfodemic\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became a major obstacle in effective response to the pandemic.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What were the steps taken to deal with the pandemic?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pandemic highlighted the need for strengthening the Indian health system and boost public health services.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Firstly,<\/b> <b>COVID-19 specific services<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which include testing, contact tracing and treatment facilities were scaled up.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Secondly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to <\/span><b>achieve self-sufficiency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the production of personal protective equipment (PPE) coverall, testing kits, and ventilators was increased in India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Thirdly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> researchers and scientists worked together to develop new testing kits, to conduct <\/span><b>clinical trials on treatment procedures and vaccines.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Fourthly,<\/b> <b>two SARS CoV-2 vaccines were approved in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and vaccination started at the beginning of 2021. The COVID-19 vaccines manufactured in India are being used in other countries as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>What are the lessons learnt from the pandemic?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has reported nearly 10.7 million confirmed cases and 1,53,000 deaths in the last year. Five lessons which should be learnt are mentioned below:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>First, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the pandemic has widened the inequalities in the society as the poor and vulnerable sections were the worst affected.\u00a0 The government should urgently<\/span><b> increase investment in strengthening health systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address inequities and reduce poverty.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will prepare the country for future pandemics and help in accelerating economic growth.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Second, Stronger health infrastructure is possible by <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interventions in various areas, such as:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governance and leadership.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health financing and health information system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing services and delivery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health infrastructure and workforce.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicines, diagnostics, and vaccines.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Third,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the hospital-dominated medical care system needs to be changed to a more inclusive health system for the lower section.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Community clinics could be set up<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0along with a strengthened primary healthcare system in both rural and urban areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Fourth, states and the union government should spend more on health care<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and public health services. Laboratories and disease surveillance systems should be well-developed. The provision of mental health services via teleconsultation can be effectively used.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Fifth, sustain the three-way partnership<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between policymakers, technical experts, and community members which have been formed for pandemic response.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This would help in ensuring that health policies are informed, effectively implemented, and services widely used by the community. People\u2019s participation and community engagement was important and need to be continued post the pandemic.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Way forward\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These learnings should be used to create a stronger healthcare system in India, which will provide accessible, available, affordable, and quality healthcare services to each and every citizen of this country.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: click here Syllabus: GS 3 Synopsis: One year has been passed when the first confirmed case was reported in India.
