{"id":80466,"date":"2021-02-04T17:54:20","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T12:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=80466"},"modified":"2021-03-01T13:49:42","modified_gmt":"2021-03-01T08:19:42","slug":"ethanol-as-an-alternate-fuel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ethanol-as-an-alternate-fuel\/","title":{"rendered":"Initiatives to promote &#8220;Ethanol as an alternate fuel&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is the News?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas has informed Lok Sabha about the initiatives taken to promote ethanol as an alternate fuel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ethanol:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ethanol or ethyl alcohol is a liquid that has several uses. <strong>At 95% purity<\/strong>, it is called rectified spirit and is used as the intoxicating ingredient in alcoholic beverages. <strong>At 99%-plus purity<\/strong>, ethanol is used for blending with petrol.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In India<\/strong>, ethanol is mainly produced from <strong>sugarcane molasses by fermentation process.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Facts about Ethanol as a Fuel:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ethanol is also considered a renewable fuel. It is produced from plants that harness the power of the sun.<\/li>\n<li>Ethanol molecule contains oxygen. It allows the engine to combust the fuel efficiently, resulting in lower emission. Thereby, it reduces environmental pollution.<\/li>\n<li>Ethanol-blended fuel keeps the fuel system clean for optimal performance. It is because it does not leave gummy deposits.<\/li>\n<li>Ethanol helps prevent wintertime problems by acting as a gas-line antifreeze.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Government Initiatives to Promote Ethanol as an alternate Fuel:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ethanol Blended Petrol(EBP) programme: <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It was launched in 2003 by the Ministry of Petroleum &amp; Natural Gas (MoP&amp;NG).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim<\/strong>: To achieve a blending of Ethanol with Petrol. It was aimed to reduce pollution, conserve foreign exchange and benefits for farmers. It increases value addition in the sugar industry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Implementation<\/strong>: The Government is implementing the programme through Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>National Policy on Biofuels (NBP) -2018: <\/strong>This policy envisages an indicative target of blending 20% ethanol in petrol by 2030.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ethanol from Sugarcane: <\/strong>Government has allowed the production of ethanol from sugarcane and food grain-based raw-materials.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interest Subvention Scheme: <\/strong>Government, in order to increase the production of ethanol, has notified interest subvention schemes for setting up of molasses and grain-based new distilleries or expansion of existing distilleries, setting up of dual-feed distilleries, installation of zero liquid discharge system among others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1694711\"><strong>PIB<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
