But the <\/span>developed countries are mindlessly collecting approved vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>Only the countries in the global south like China and India are helping out other countries.<\/p>\n<p><b>How are rich countries engaging in vaccine battles?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per a few reports, the advance purchase contracts made by some countries for potential vaccine procurement are way above their need. It would <\/span><b>vaccinate their population many times.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>For example<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the EU population can be vaccinated two times, the US and the UK four times, and Canada six times.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">82% of Pfizer\u2019s production in 2021 and 78% of Moderna\u2019s have already been <\/span><b>advance purchased by leading countries.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advanced countries are engaged in <\/span><b>vaccine battles as they believe that an early vaccination will bring back normalcy in their countries. Concepts of <\/b>Public good and global cooperation are missing from the scene.<\/p>\n<p><b>What is India\u2019s stance?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, India is exporting a <\/span><b>major percentage of the approved doses. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its initial shipment to the least developed countries will be free of cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Exports from India are helping other nations, especially its neighbouring countries<b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For example, Brazil has received 2 million doses of vaccine from India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s approach supports the need for <\/span><b>coordinated international efforts to bring COVID-19 under control.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Solutions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The COVAX project is a program based on funding from high and middle-income countries. It is a global risk-sharing mechanism <b>for shared obtaining and fair distribution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of COVID-19 vaccines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This project aimed to deliver 2 billion doses by the end of 2021. But it is facing challenges from rich countries due to their excessive vaccine procurement, directly from suppliers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>But now as <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. President Joe Biden has decided to join the COVAX project,\u00a0 expectations from the project are high. India, which is a hub of cost-effective vaccines, would be instrumental in its success. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<strong>For example<\/strong>, Covishield, the Oxford University-AstraZeneca vaccine produced in India costs only $3 per dose; Covaxin is priced at $4.2.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The way forward<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The development of vaccines should have shown global cooperation between the North and the South.
