{"id":81505,"date":"2021-02-09T20:48:08","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T15:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=81505"},"modified":"2021-02-11T11:00:33","modified_gmt":"2021-02-11T05:30:33","slug":"lingayats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/lingayats\/","title":{"rendered":"Veerashaiva &#8220;Lingayats&#8221; demanding for Quota"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is the News?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Veerashaiva Lingayats are demanding inclusion in the Other Backward Classes(OBC) quota category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who are the Lingayats?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lingayats are classified as a Hindu sub-caste called Veerashaiva Lingayats.<\/li>\n<li>They are essentially followers of the 12th-century philosopher <a href=\"https:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/basava-jayanthi\/\">Saint Basavanna<\/a> who was against the caste system and Vedic rituals.<\/li>\n<li>They are a dominant community who make up nearly 17% of Karnataka\u2019s six crore population.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is the current controversy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Currently, <strong>Veerashaiva Lingayats<\/strong> have been provided 5% reservation under a special category called 3B.<\/li>\n<li>However, a sub-sect called the <strong>Panchamasali Lingayats<\/strong> are demanding reservations under the category 2A. This category currently provides 15% reservations to backward castes. <strong>Panchamasali Lingayats are <\/strong>basically agriculturists who account for nearly 70% of Lingayats.<\/li>\n<li>Hence, Karnataka CM has directed the chairman of the Karnataka Backward Classes Commission to conduct a study. The Commission will submit a report on the social, economic, and educational status of the Panchamasali community to determine their inclusion under the 2A category.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Characteristics of Lingayatism:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Lingayats are strict monotheists. They enjoin the worship of only one God, namely, Linga (Shiva).<\/li>\n<li>Lingayatism rejects any form of social discrimination including the caste system.<\/li>\n<li>The Lingayats always wear the Ishtalinga (a necklace with a pendant that contains a small Shiva Linga).
