{"id":8247,"date":"2019-07-20T16:03:08","date_gmt":"2019-07-20T10:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=8247"},"modified":"2019-07-20T16:03:08","modified_gmt":"2019-07-20T10:33:08","slug":"assam-nrc-sc-questions-need-for-sample-reverification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/assam-nrc-sc-questions-need-for-sample-reverification\/","title":{"rendered":"Assam NRC: SC questions need for sample reverification"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Supreme court has questioned the plea made\njointly by the Centre and Assam to extend the deadline for publication of the\nfinal National Register of Citizens (NRC) from July 31 in order to conduct a\nsample reverification process.<\/li><li>The Centre and Assam government had sought a 20\n% sample re-verification of names included in the final draft of the NRC in the\ndistricts bordering Bangladesh and a 10% sample re-verification in the\nremaining districts.<\/li><li>The rationale behind the sample reverification\nis to identify illegal immigrants who may have been included in NRC list,\nespecially in the districts bordering Bangladesh.<\/li><li>The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a\nregister which contains the name of all citizens of India residing in Assam. It\nwas first prepared in 1951.<\/li><li>Currently, the NRC is being updated in Assam to\naddress the issue of illegal migrants. It seeks to identify illegal migrants in\nAssam who had entered the state on or after 25th March 1971.<\/li><li>The update is being carried out under the\nCitizenship Act, 1955, and according to rules framed in the Assam Accord, 1985.<\/li><li>The draft Assam NRC was published on July 30,\n2018 in which the names of 2.89 crore of the 3.29 crore people were included.<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme court has questioned the plea made jointly by the Centre and Assam to extend the deadline for publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) from July 31 in order to conduct a sample reverification process.
