It is a laudable step for reducing tension between the two countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Background:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two countries were undergoing severe tensions since May 2020. It is when the Chinese army entered 8 km inside Eastern Ladakh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Chinese encroachment along east of finger 8 along the LAC (Line of Actual Control) led to unprecedented clashes. The most severe was the Galwan valley clash that caused casualties at both ends.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost 10 months after the first clash, China agreed to enter into a conciliatory agreement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/disengagement-agreement-in-pangong-tso-region\/\">About the agreement<\/a>:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It calls for a <\/span><b>systematic and coordinated withdrawal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">along the northern and southern banks of Pangong Tso region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China has to pull back its troops at Siriraj, east of Finger 8 and dismantle infrastructure created after April 2020.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has to return to its Dhan Singh Thapa Post near Finger 3.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>temporary moratorium <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on patrolling activities has been imposed along the northern bank of Pangong Tso.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-china-disengagement-agreement-along-lac\/\">Reasons behind<\/a> China\u2019s altered stance:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>First<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>good diplomacy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was shown by the Indian government that didn\u2019t surrender to Chinese demands.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Second<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><b>strategic advantage <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was gained by Indian army at Kailash heights in the southern bank which enhanced its bargaining power.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Third<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, China realized that a long stand-off will only <\/span><b>hamper bilateral relations <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and would give little gain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fourth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the<\/span><b> growing closeness of India-US <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and their greater engagement in the <\/span><b>QUAD group, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might have pressurized China to alter its stance.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an informal group of the US, Japan, India and Australia. The group aims to maintain a rules based order in the Indo-Pacific region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Way Forward<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agreement must be implemented in letter and spirit to <\/span><b>re-instill the lost<\/b> <b>trust <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between the countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The focus should be on doing robust <\/span><b>verification and monitoring <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in order to ensure its effective implementation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The success of this disengagement agreement will also open gates for<\/span><b> negotiation on other friction points <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like Hot Springs and Depsang plains.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Synopsis: India and China have simultaneously begun disengagement activities around the Pangong Tso region in eastern Ladakh.
