The results of the experiment will determine the quest for life on Mars and the future manned mission to Mars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Introduction\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perseverance mission is the most advanced, most expensive, and most sophisticated mobile laboratory sent to Mars. The results will determine the next couple of decades of Martian exploration<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Experiments on Mars in the past 30 years:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> Viking missions in the mid-70s<\/strong>: <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During these missions the first<\/span><b>\u00a0chemical analyses of Martian soil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took place. Along with that, four biology experiments to detect biological activity were also conducted.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>In 1984, <\/strong>a study showed that the <\/span><b>isotopic composition of rare gases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Xenon, Krypton, Neon, and Argon) in the earth,\u00a0matched the isotopic ratios of the Martian atmosphere measured by Viking spacecraft. This discovery boosted the understanding of the geochemical evolution of Mars.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mars Odyssey spacecraft in 2001<\/strong>: This spacecraft found the hydrogen signature on Mars. This indicated the presence of <strong>water ice<\/strong> <\/span><b>on Mars.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Phoenix Mars lander in 2008: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NASA sent another spacecraft to Mars. It landed near the Martian South Pole. The lander <strong>officially confirmed the presence of water<\/strong> on Mars for the first time.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Why are scientists so interested in Mars?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists are interested in Martian research primarily for two reasons. They are, =<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>First,<\/b> <b>life may have evolved in the past on Mars. <\/b>Further, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mars had conditions similar to earth. There is a possibility that microscopic life evolved on Mars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Second,<\/b> <b>Mars is the only planet that humans can visit.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has a temperature ranging from between 20 degrees C at the Equator to minus 125 degrees C at the poles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is the significance of the Perseverance mission?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perseverance focuses on finding life on Mars and will help in a future human mission to that planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erseverance would bring rock samples back from Mars. This will provide a <\/span><b>decisive answer on whether life existed on Mars in the past or not.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Producing oxygen on Mars <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is needed for a successful human mission. Perseverance has an instrument known as <\/span><b>MOXIE or Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilisation Experiment. <\/b>It <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will use 300 watts of power to produce about 10 grams of oxygen using atmospheric carbon dioxide.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will provide oxygen for breathing and rocket fuel.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erseverance will carry the Radar Imager for Mars\u2019 Subsurface Experiment (<\/span><b>RIMFAX). <\/b>This will <b>help in looking for underground water on Mars.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It could possibly help in the human settlement on Mars if the water is found.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Apart from that, Perseverance will <b>try to fly a helicopter on Mars<\/b> (which <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has a sparse atmosphere). The Mars Helicopter is really a small drone. Currently, long-distance transportation on Mars has to depend on vehicles that rely on rocket engines for powered ascent and powered descent.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Conclusion\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perseverance is expected to provide a significant understanding of whether a <strong>human mission to Mars is possible or not<\/strong>.
