Foodborne diseases\nencompass a wide spectrum of illnesses and are a growing public health problem\nworldwide. They are the result of ingestion of foodstuffs contaminated with\nmicroorganisms or chemicals.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Globally, Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa have the\nhighest incidence of FBDs, highest rate of deaths due to FBDs and largest loss\nof disability adjusted life years (DALY). India and China together account for\n49% of the total economic burden of FBDs in low and middle income countries\n(LMIC) and 71% of the total burden in Asia. <\/li><li>Animal source food is estimated to account for\n21% of India\u2019s FBD burden. <\/li><li>In recent times, the Food Safety and Standards\nAuthority of India (FSSAI) has taken a number of measures to ensure food safety\nin India. These include a) stringent packaging and labelling norms, b)\nregulation of restaurant and street food, c) inspections and sampling of food\nproducts.
