Sri\nLanka is the fifth country in WHO\u2019s Southeast Asia region to eliminate measles.\nThe other four countries are Bhutan, Maldives, DPR Korea and Timor-Leste.<\/li><li>Sri Lanka\u2019s success follows its persistent\nefforts to ensure maximum coverage with two doses of measles and rubella\nvaccines being provided in the childhood immunisation programme. The\nvaccination coverage is 95%<\/li><li>Measles is a highly contagious viral disease\nthat is spread by contact with an infected person through coughing and\nsneezing. Rubella, or German measles, is an infection caused by the rubella\nvirus. Both can be entirely prevented with vaccine.<\/li><li>According to the latest Global Measles and\nRubella Update, India reported 47,056 measles cases and 1,263 rubella cases\nduring May 2018 and April 2019<\/li><li>Under the Global Vaccine Action Plan, WHO has targeted\nto eliminate measles and rubella by 2020. Rubella control is achieved when a\ncountry reduces the number of rubella cases by 95% as compared to cases in\n2008.<\/li><li>India has initiated the world\u2019s largest\nMeasles-Rubella (MR) Campaign in 2017.
