Earlier the target set was 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>WHO SEAR member countries have adopted a\n\u201cStrategic Plan for Measles and Rubella Elimination 2020-2024\u201d at the 72nd\nsession of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia in Delhi. It lays\ndown the road map and focus areas to achieve the elimination targets in the region.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional\nInformation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Measles and Rubella<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Measles and Rubella (German measles) are contagious\nviral disease that is spread by contact with an infected person through coughing\nand sneezing. Measles is caused by Rubeola virus and Rubella is caused by\nRubella virus.<\/li><li>Measles can cause serious complications,\nincluding blindness, encephalitis, severe diarrhoea, ear infection and\npneumonia<\/li><li>Measles and Rubella have similar symptoms. However,\nrubella is a milder viral infection than measles. Rubella infection in pregnant\nwomen may cause foetal death or congenital defects known as <strong>congenital rubella syndrome<\/strong><\/li><li>Both of them can be entirely prevent with a\ntwo-dose of MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Status of Measles and\nRubella in India<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>According to the latest Global Measles and\nRubella Update, India reported 47,056 measles cases and 1,263 rubella cases\nduring May 2018 and April 2019<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Elimination Efforts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>India:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>India has initiated the world\u2019s largest Measles-Rubella (MR) Campaign in 2017. It targets vaccination of 410 million children and adolescents aged between 9 months and 15 years.<\/li><li>It is also covered under <strong>Mission Indradhanaush<\/strong>. Launched in 2014, the mission aims to cover all those children by 2020 who are either unvaccinated, or are partially vaccinated against vaccine preventable diseases<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Global:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Global\nVaccine Action Plan<\/strong>: Under the Global Vaccine Action Plan, WHO has targeted\nto eliminate measles by 2020<\/li><li><strong>\u2018Measles\nElimination and Rubella\/CRS Control by 2020\u2019<\/strong>: In 2013, WHO SEAR initiated \u2018Measles\nElimination and Rubella\/CRS Control by 2020\u2019 which sought to curb and control\nmeasles and rubella through immunization, surveillance and developing and\nmaintaining an accredited measles laboratory network. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WHO SEAR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It has 11 member countries- Bangladesh, India,\nIndonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan, DPR Korea, Myanmar, Maldives and\nTimor-Leste. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Member Countries of WHO South-East Asia Region (SEAR) has resolved to eliminate measles and rubella by 2023.
