The countries are India, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Haiti,\nKenya, Senegal, South Africa, and Uganda.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Takeaways from\nthe Report:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sanitation workers across the developing world\noften suffer because of weak legal protection and lack of enforcement of\nexisting rules.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Despite laws and regulations being in place in\nIndia, the practice of manual scavenging has not been curtailed but has been\nforced underground.<\/li><li>In sanitation work, those considered to be of a lower\ncaste suffer discrimination in healthcare, education, employment, access to\nland, employment and wages.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional\nInformation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About manual scavenging:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Manual\n scavenging is the practice of manually cleaning, carrying, disposing of,\n or handling human excreta.<\/li><li>The\n International Labour Organization (ILO) distinguishes three forms of\n manual scavenging: a) Removal of human excrement from public streets and\n dry latrines, b) Cleaning septic tanks, and c) Cleaning gutters and\n sewers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Indian Government\nefforts to end Manual Scavenging:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The Employment of Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prohibition) Act, 1993:<\/strong><ul><li> The main objectives of the law were to prohibit employment of manual scavengers, construction or continuance of dry latrine and for the regulation of maintenance of water-seal latrines. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013<\/strong><ul><li>The law intends to eliminate insanitary latrines and prohibit employment as manual scavengers. It also prohibits hazardous manual cleaning of sewer and septic tanks.<\/li><li> Act made the states responsible for identifying and rehabilitating manual scavengers by providing them training, giving assistance, loans and even houses.<\/li><li>It fixed responsibility on each local authority, cantonment board and railway authority to survey unsanitary (dry) latrines within its jurisdiction and to construct sanitary community latrines.<\/li><li>Offences under the act are cognizable and non-bailable <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Self-Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers (SRMS)<\/strong> <ul><li>The scheme aims to rehabilitate manual scavengers and their dependents in alternative occupations, in a time bound manner. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Swachh Bharat Abhiyan<\/strong>: It has fourfold aim:<ul><li> To eliminate open defecation<\/li><li>To eradicate manual scavenging<\/li><li>To bring in modern and scientific municipal solid waste management<\/li><li>Behavioural change regarding healthy sanitation practices <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: WHO has released a report titled \u201cHealth, Safety and Dignity of Sanitation Workers \u2014 An Initial Assessment\u201d Facts: About The Report The report has been jointly authored by the International Labour Organization, WaterAid, World Bank, and WHO.
