Example: Haemophilia, Thalassemia, Sickle cell anaemia, auto-immune diseases etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>National Policy for Treatment of Rare Diseases<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Three Categories of Rare Diseases:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&nbsp;diseases requiring one-time curative treatment,<\/li><li>&nbsp;diseases which need long-term treatment but the cost is low, and<\/li><li>&nbsp;diseases that require life-long treatment and the cost is high<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key measures suggested<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Arriving at a definition of rare diseases suited to India<\/li><li>Creating a patient registry for rare diseases housed in ICMR<\/li><li>Strengthen laboratory networks for diagnosis of rare diseases<\/li><li>Centre to provide assistance of Rs 15 lakh to patients suffering from rare diseases that require one-time curative treatment under the Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi scheme<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional Information<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi scheme:<\/strong> It provides financial assistance to patients, living below poverty line and who are suffering from major life threatening diseases, to receive medical treatment.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare published a national policy for treatment of rare diseases, listing 450 diseases as rare.
