{"id":84908,"date":"2020-01-06T12:20:13","date_gmt":"2020-01-06T06:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=13018"},"modified":"2020-01-06T12:20:13","modified_gmt":"2020-01-06T06:50:13","slug":"telling-numbers-projected-drop-in-male-tobacco-use-underlines-shifting-trends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/telling-numbers-projected-drop-in-male-tobacco-use-underlines-shifting-trends\/","title":{"rendered":"Telling Numbers: Projected drop in male tobacco use underlines shifting trends"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> World Health Organization has launched \u201cGlobal report on trends in prevalence of tobacco use 2000-2025 third edition\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key highlights:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The tobacco use prevalence was at 33.3% in 2000 and is projected to reach 20.9% in 2025.<\/li><li>India had a 44% prevalence of tobacco use in 2000, and, this is expected to reduce to 22.3% by 2025.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional Information:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tobacco Control in India<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It prohibits advertisement of cigarettes and other tobacco products in India.<\/li><li>Smoking in public places (including indoor workplaces) is prohibited.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pictorial warnings<\/strong>: Pictorial warnings on both sides of packages of cigarettes, bidis and all forms of chewing tobacco products is compulsory and currently covers 85% of the packet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Global Initiative:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), 2003<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Objective: To provide a framework for supply and demand reduction measures for tobacco control at the national, regional and global levels.<\/li><li>India is a signatory.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MPOWER: It is <\/strong>a package of selected demand reduction measures put forward by WHO.
