According to scientists, the new finding could be an\nalternative to antibiotics used on livestock. The research has been published\nin <em>Biochimica et Biophysica Acta \u2013\nBiomembranes.<\/em><\/li><li>Echidnas are also known as spiny anteaters. They\nare unique egg-laying mammals found only in Australia and New Guinea.<\/li><li>Echidnas hatch from eggs at a very early stage\nof development and depend completely on mother\u2019s milk. However, the mammary\nglands of the echidnas are devoid of nipples, forcing the young ones to lick\nmilk from the mother\u2019s body surface and thus making them vulnerable to\nmicro-organisms.<\/li><li>However, the milk contains a novel\nanti-microbial protein that helps to keep young ones safe from infections.\nResearch has revealed that the protein punctures cell membranes of bacteria thus\ndestroying the source of infection.<\/li><li>Scientists have said that there are ways to\nproduce the protein in large quantities using E. coli and can then be used to\nfight mastitis-an infection of the mammary gland, in dairy animals. Due to\nindiscriminate use of antibiotics in livestock there is a rise of superbugs\nwhich can cause mastitis.<\/li><li>Microorganisms that develop antimicrobial\nresistance are referred to as \u201csuperbugs\u201d.
