  1. Recently, a 34-member panel of the Anthropocene\nWorking Group (AWG) has voted in favour of designating a new geological epoch \u2014\nthe Anthropocene. An epoch is a subdivision of the geologic timescale. It is\nlonger than an age but shorter than a period.<\/li>
  2. The geological periods basically reflect the\nnatural patterns and changes of Earth history. The periods are further divided into\nEpochs and Ages.<\/li>
  3. The current epoch is the Holocene Epoch of the\nQuaternary Period. The Holocene epoch began 11,700 years ago. The proposed Anthropocene\nepoch would mark the end of the Holocene epoch.<\/li>
  4. The term \u2018Anthropocene\u2019 was coined in 2000 by\nNobel Laureate Paul Crutzen and Eugene Stoermer. It describes the present\ngeological time interval in which human activity has profoundly altered many\nconditions and processes on Earth.<\/li>

According to the AWG, the characteristics of the\nAnthropocene epoch are: a) unprecedented increase in erosion and sediment\ntransport associated with urbanisation and agriculture, b) marked and abrupt\nanthropogenic perturbations of the cycles of elements such as carbon, environmental\nchanges generated by these perturbations, including global warming, sea-level\nrise, and ocean acidification, c) rapid changes in the biosphere and d) proliferation\nand global dispersion of many new \u2018minerals\u2019 and \u2018rocks\u2019 including concrete, fly\nash and plastics, and \u2018technofossils\u2019 produced from these and other materials.<\/li>
  6. In the future course of action, scientists would\nhave to find Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene epoch.\nIt is a definitive geologic marker or golden spike which marks the beginning of\nan epoch. It must be present globally and should be a part of deposits for\ngeological record.<\/li>
  7. The AWG needs to make a formal proposal to designate\nthe new geological epoch as Anthropocene. This would be considered by several\nmore groups of the International Commission on Stratigraphy. The final ratification\nwill be made by the executive committee of the International Union of\nGeological Sciences- an international non-governmental organization devoted to\ninternational cooperation in the field of geology.<\/li><\/ol>\n
