If successful, India will be the 4th country ever to soft land on\nthe lunar surface- after USA, Russia and China. <\/li><li>It seeks to land on the lunar south pole-\nunexplored by any nation before. The lunar South Pole is especially interesting\nbecause a larger section of its surface stays in the shadow than the North\nPole. <\/li><li>There is a possibility of the presence of water\nin permanently shadowed areas around it. Also, the South Polar Region has\ncraters that are cold traps, containing a fossilised record of the early Solar\nSystem.<\/li><li>Chandrayaan 2 will use the Vikram lander and\nPragyan rover to attempt a soft landing in a high plain between two craters \u2014\nManzinus C and Simpelius N.<\/li><li>Chandrayaan-2 will carry out extensive\nthree-dimensional mapping of the topography of the lunar South Pole region.
