The programme is expected to be launched in\nOctober 2019<\/li><li>The first phase of exercise will involve sequencing\nthe complete genomes of nearly 10,000 Indians from different parts of India and\ncapture the biological diversity of India.<\/li><li>In the second phase, genome sequencing will be\ndone of about 10,000 diseased individuals. The data sets would be compared\nusing machine learning techniques to identify genes that can predict cancer\nrisk.<\/li><li>The data generated would be made accessible to\nresearchers anywhere for analysis. This would be through a proposed National\nBiological Data Centre envisaged in a policy called the \u2018Biological Data\nStorage, Access and Sharing Policy\u2019.<\/li><li>Genome sequencing means determining the order of\nthe four chemical building blocks \u2013 called \u201cbases\u201d \u2013 that make up the DNA\nmolecule. <\/li><li>Genome sequencing helps to understand how genes\nwork together to direct the growth, development and maintenance of an organism.\nIt helps to determine unique genetic traits, susceptibility and resilience to\ndiseases.<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has planned to scan nearly 20,000 Indian genomes to develop diagnostic tests that can be used to test for cancer.
