This was achieved by\ninstalling microbial fuel cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Definition:<\/strong> Microbial\nfuel cells (MFCs) are devices that use bacteria as the catalysts to oxidize organic\nand inorganic matter and generate current. The idea of using microbes to\nproduce electricity was conceived by M. C. Potter in early 20<sup>th<\/sup>\ncentury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Process: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Generally MFC consists of anode and cathode\ncompartments, which are separated by a cationic membrane. <\/li><li>Microbes reside in the anode compartment, where\nthey metabolize organic compounds such as glucose which act as electron donor.\nThe metabolism of these organic compounds generates electrons and protons. <\/li><li>Electrons are then transferred to the anode\nsurface. From anode, the electrons move to cathode through the electrical\ncircuit, while the protons migrate through the electrolyte and then through the\ncationic membrane. <\/li><li>Electrons and protons are consumed in the\ncathode by reduction of soluble electron acceptor, such as oxygen or\nhexacynoferrate and acidic permanganate. Electrical power is harnessed by\nplacing a load between the two electrode compartments.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/factly.forumias.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/mfc.gif?w=750\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10959\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Applications of MFCs:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Production of low-cost electricity from waste\nmaterials.<\/li><li>Can be used as an alternate method for\nbioremediation.<\/li><li>Can act as a biosensor-can measure the solute\nconcentration of wastewater.<\/li><li>Can be used in waste-water treatment.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: At the London Zoo, a fern has started taking its own selfies.
