  1. The Supreme Court has warned the Haryana\ngovernment that it will be in “trouble” if it has done\n“anything” with Aravalli hills or forest area. This comes in the\nbackdrop of Haryana government seeking to amend the Punjab Land Preservation\nAct (PLPA), 1900.<\/li>
  2. The PLPA was enacted by the then Punjab\ngovernment in 1900. It provided for conservation of subsoil water and\nprevention of erosion in areas found to be subject to erosion or likely to\nbecome liable to erosion.<\/li>
  3. The Haryana government had recently passed the Punjab\nLand Preservation (Haryana amendment) Act, 2019. The Act amends the PLPA\n1900. It permits construction activities in areas that were protected as\nforests under PLPA 1900. The Supreme Court had stayed the PLPA 2019 on 1st\n<\/sup>March 2019.<\/li>
  4. The Supreme Court had previously ordered\ndemolition of illegal constructions in the Aravalli area which were in\nviolation of August 18, 1992 notification issued under PLPA 1900. The 1992 notification had prohibited\nclearing or breaking up of land not ordinarily under cultivation.<\/li>
  5. Haryana government\u2019s decision to amend PLPA 1900\nhas been criticised for violating 1992 notification and violation of\nSupreme Court orders in which it has been stated that areas under PLPA are\ndeemed forest<\/li>
  6. Aravalli are the oldest mountain range in India.\nIt spreads across the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi.<\/li>
  7. The Aravalli fold mountains are particularly\nsignificant for it\u2019s a) role in prevention of the spread of the Thar Desert\ntowards eastern Rajasthan, Indo Gangetic plains, Haryana and Western UP,\nb) ground water recharge function, c) blocking dust storms approaching and\nd) ecological balance: It has forested patches: Haryana\u2019s five forest\ndivisions- Gurgaon, Mewat, Mahendergarh, Faridabad and Rewari- still have more\nthan 465sqkm of total forest area.<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
