  1. The Union Water Ministry is finalising an\nupdated estimate on the state of groundwater reserves in India.<\/li>
  2. Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) jointly with\nState Ground Water Departments carries out periodic assessment of ground water\nresources of the entire country. The last assessment was done in 2013. <\/li>
  3. The groundwater resources of India are assessed Groundwater\nEstimation Methodology, 1997. The methodology was recommended by the Ground\nWater Estimation Committee of 1997. <\/li>
  4. The assessment brings out the level of stress on\nthe available groundwater resources in India. It forms the basis for\ncategorization of different administrative units in the country as Safe,\nSemi-Critical, Critical, Over Exploited categories.<\/li>
  5. The assessment is highly significant as it forms\nthe basis for planning ground water management interventions like artificial\nrecharge, regulation of ground water use etc.<\/li>
  6. In 2013, the CGWB assessed 6,584 units across\nthe country and found 4,520 to be \u201csafe,\u201d 681 to be \u201csemi-critical\u201d 253 to be\n\u201ccritical\u201d and 1,034 to be \u201coverexploited.\u201d About 96 blocks were \u201csaline\u201d.<\/li>
  7. Further, a 2015 CGWB report shows that annual\nwater availability of India in terms of natural runoff (flow) in rivers is\nabout 1,869 Billion Cubic Meter (BCM)\/year. However, the usable water resources\nof the country is about 1,123 BCM\/year. This is due to geographical limitation\nand water being unequally distributed in various river basins, making it\ndifficult to extract all the available water.<\/li>
  8. Out of the 1,123 BCM\/year, the shares of surface\nwater and groundwater are 690 BCM\/year and 433 BCM\/year respectively. The net\nannual ground water availability for the entire country is 398 BCM after\nexcluding 35 BCM for natural discharge. The overall contribution of rainfall to\nthe country\u2019s annual ground water resource is 68%.<\/li>
  9. The national per capita annual availability of\nwater has reduced by 15% from 2001 to 2011 \u2013 a reduction from 1,816 cubic\nmetres in 2001 to 1,544 cubic metres in 2011 <\/li><\/ol>\n
