{"id":86921,"date":"2019-08-14T18:09:47","date_gmt":"2019-08-14T12:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=9178"},"modified":"2019-08-14T18:09:47","modified_gmt":"2019-08-14T12:39:47","slug":"high-co2-emissions-reducing-nutrients-in-rice-wheat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/high-co2-emissions-reducing-nutrients-in-rice-wheat\/","title":{"rendered":"High CO2 emissions reducing nutrients in rice, wheat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>According to the IPCC\u2019s special report on <em>Climate Change and Land<\/em>, increased atmospheric\nconcentrations of CO2 can reduce the nutritional quality of staple foods like\nwheat and rice.<\/li><li>The IPCC report has noted that wheat grown at\nCO2 levels of 546-586 parts per million (ppm) has 5.9-12.7% less protein,\n3.7-6.5% less zinc, and 5.2-7.5% less iron.<\/li><li>Under similar levels of CO2, rice grains has lower\nprotein (7.8%), iron (8%) and zinc (5%).<\/li><li>According to the report, the land sector had\nbeen contributing about 5.2 billion tonnes of Carbon dioxide every year between\n2007 and 2016.<\/li><li>It further notes that the global food production\nsystem could account for 16 to 27% of GHG emissions \u2014 up to 37%, if factors\nsuch as transportation and food processing are included.<\/li><li>It points out that nearly 25% of all food\nproduced is either lost or wasted. And even the decomposition of the waste\nreleases emissions<\/li><li>The report suggests measures such as a)\nreduction in food wastage, b) sustainable agriculture practices and c) shifting\nof dietary preferences to include more plant-based food, could reduce GHG\nemissions and strengthen food security.<\/li><li>&nbsp;The IPCC\nreport has suggested that insect-based diets could be a more sustainable and\nnutritious option. Edible insects are high in fat, protein and micronutrients.\nFurther, their production result in lower levels of GHG emissions and water\nconsumption.<\/li><li>The IPCC is an intergovernmental body of the\nUnited Nations. It provides policymakers with regular scientific assessments on\nclimate change, its implications and potential future risks.
