The ban will be in place till May 31, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Olive Ridley\nTurtles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Olive Ridley turtles are the smallest and most abundant of all sea turtles in the world. <\/li><li>They inhabit in the warm waters of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. <\/li><li>It is listed as <strong>Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List<\/strong>. Further, it has been listed on <strong>Schedule \u2013 I<\/strong> of the <strong>Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.<\/strong><\/li><li>The Indian Coast Guard also undertakes \u201cOperation Olivia\u201d every year. It is an Olive Ridley Turtle protection program.<\/li><li>The Olive Ridley turtles are best known for their unique mass nesting called <strong>Arribada<\/strong>. During Arribada, a large number of female turtles come together on the same beach to lay eggs. <\/li><li>An important breeding area for olive Ridleys in the Indian Ocean along the Bay of Bengal is Odisha. There are three major mass nesting areas: <ul><li>Gahirmatha rookery (Gahiramatha Marine Sanctuary) close to the mouth of Brahmani-Baitarani Rivers,<\/li><li>Devi river mouth and<\/li><li> Rushikulya river mouth<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The <strong>major threats to Olive Ridley turtles<\/strong> are: <ul><li>poor fishing practices, <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>development and exploitation of nesting beaches for ports, and tourist centres, <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Poaching for their meat, shell and leather. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Gahiramatha\nMarine Sanctuary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gahiramatha is located in Odisha\u2019s Kendrapada\ndistrict.
