It\nwas adopted by the Thirty-First Session of the Conference of the Food and\nAgriculture Organization of the United Nations in 2001. It entered into force\nin 2004.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Treaty aims at:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>recognizing\n the enormous contribution of farmers to the diversity of crops that feed\n the world;<\/li><li>establishing\n a global system to provide farmers, plant breeders and scientists with\n access to plant genetic materials;<\/li><li>Ensuring\n that recipients share benefits they derive from the use of these genetic\n materials with the countries where they have been originated.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Main Provisions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Multilateral\nSystem:<\/strong> The treaty has implemented a Multilateral System (MLS) of access\nand benefit sharing, among those countries that ratify the treaty, for a list\nof 64 of some of the most important food and forage crops essential for food\nsecurity.<\/li><li><strong>Access\nand benefit sharing:<\/strong> The treaty facilitates access to the genetic materials\nof the 64 crops in the Multilateral System for research, breeding and training\nfor food and agriculture.<\/li><li><strong>Farmers\u2019\nrights:<\/strong> The Treaty calls for protecting the traditional knowledge of these\nfarmers, increasing their participation in national decision-making processes\nand ensuring that they share in the benefits from the use of plant genetic resources.<\/li><li><strong>Sustainable\nuse:<\/strong> The Treaty helps maximize the use and breeding of all crops and\npromotes development and maintenance of diverse farming systems.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional\nInformation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Food and Agriculture\nOrganization (FAO)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is a specialized agency of the United Nations\nthat leads international efforts to defeat hunger.<\/li><li>It was established in 1945 and is headquartered\nin Rome, Italy<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Union Agriculture Minister attended the eight session of the Governing Body of International Treaty of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), at Rome, Italy Facts: About International Treaty of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) It is also known as International SEED Treaty.
