The UN panel has reported that nearly one million Uighurs\nare being held in detention centres in Xinjiang.<\/li><li>Xinjiang is an administrative region in\nnorth-western China. The region borders eight countries \u2013 Mongolia, Russia,\nKazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. The\npopulation in Xinjiang is predominantly Uighurs. Uighurs are ethnically Turkic\nMuslims.<\/li><li>In response to large-scale ethnic rioting and\nattacks in Xinjiang since 2009, China has enhanced security in the region to\ncombat terrorism, extremism and separatism.<\/li><li>Of late, China has been repeatedly accused of\ndetaining Uighur Muslims and other Muslim groups in the western Xinjiang\nregion. However, China has always maintained that there are no internment\ncamps.
