  1. An Australian diplomatic source has said that\nthe third edition of AUSINDEX exercise (Exercise Australia-India) will be held\noff the coast of Vishakhapatnam from 2nd<\/sup>-16th<\/sup> April 2019.\n<\/li>
  2. AUSINDEX is a biennial bilateral maritime exercise\nbetween Indian Navy and Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The first edition of the\nexercise, AUSINDEX-15 took place in 2015 off the East Coast of India. The\nexercise is aimed at strengthening professional interaction and enhance interoperability\nbetween the two navies. It seeks to strengthen maritime cooperation between the\nIndia and Australia.<\/li>
  3. The focus of AUSINDEX 2019 will be\nanti-submarine warfare. India will deploy P-8I aircraft and Australia will\ndeploy P-8A aircraft. These are designed for long-range anti-submarine warfare,\nanti-surface warfare, intelligence, and surveillance and reconnaissance missions.<\/li>
  4. According to Australian diplomatic sources, four\nRoyal Australian Navy ships will participate in the exercise. These include HMAS\n(Her Majesty\u2019s Australian Ship) Canberra, HMAS Success, HMAS Newcastle, and\nHMAS Parramatta.<\/li>
  5. AUSINDEX assumes particular significance at a\ntime when China’s growing presence in the Indo-Pacific region has been a matter\nof concern for India, Australia and USA.<\/li>
  6. Australian source has said that AUSINDEX is a reflection\nof depending ties between India and Australia. He further added that Australia\u2019s\nabsence in the Malabar exercise does not affect India- Australia defence ties. <\/li>
  7. The Malabar exercise is a trilateral naval\nexercise conducted among the United States, India and Japan. It was established\nin 1992 between India and the United States. However, due to tensions arising\nfrom India\u2019s nuclearization in 1998, it became an annual feature only in 2002. Japan\njoined as a permanent member in 2015.<\/li>
  8. In 2007, India had invited Australia, Japan, and\nSingapore to be part of the exercise. However, China had labelled the move to\nexpand Malabar exercise as an \u2018anti-China coalition\u2019. To maintain a good\neconomic relationship with China, Australia withdrew its name from the “Quadrilateral”.<\/li>
