With regard to the National Register of\nCitizens, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided to extend assistance\nto the Assam government in setting up 1,000 foreigner\u2019s tribunals where people\ncan contest their exclusion. Further, the Assam government has also proposed to\nset up e-Foreigners Tribunal.<\/li>
  2. The MHA decision comes after the Supreme Court\nrecently questioned the state government\u2019s plan to set up 1,000 Foreigners\u2019\nTribunals. The apex court had questioned the feasibility of setting up these\ntribunals and appointing judicial officers to preside over them.<\/li>

The court had highlighted that there would be an\ninflux of petitions in the foreigners\u2019 tribunals once the final NRC is published\non July 31st <\/sup>2019.  The\nNational Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register which contains the name of\nall citizens of India residing in Assam. The process of NRC update in Assam has\nbeen taken up as per a Supreme Court order in 2013.<\/li>
  4. Foreigners Tribunal (FT) was set up in Assam in\n1964 through the Foreigners Tribunal Order 1964. The tribunals are mandated\nwith identifying the legal status of suspected foreigners in Assam.<\/li>
  5. At present, there are 100 FTs in Assam; of these\n64 were set up in 2015, to expedite the exercise of determining illegal\nimmigrants in the state through the National Register of Citizens (NRC).<\/li><\/ol>\n
