{"id":9015,"date":"2019-08-09T17:54:52","date_gmt":"2019-08-09T12:24:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=9015"},"modified":"2019-08-09T17:54:52","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T12:24:52","slug":"worlds-food-supply-at-risk-due-to-climate-change-window-to-act-rapidly-closing-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/worlds-food-supply-at-risk-due-to-climate-change-window-to-act-rapidly-closing-un\/","title":{"rendered":"World\u2019s food supply at risk due to climate change, window to act rapidly closing: UN"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)\nhas recently released a report titled Climate Change and Land\u2019. <\/li><li>The report explains how land-based activities\nsuch as agriculture, forestry, cattle-rearing and urbanisation is causing\nglobal warming, and is affected by the climate change.<\/li><li>According to the report, the land sector had\nbeen contributing about 5.2 billion tonnes of Carbon dioxide every year between\n2007 and 2016.<\/li><li>It further notes that the global food production\nsystem could account for 16 to 27% of GHG emissions \u2014 up to 37%, if factors\nsuch as transportation and food processing are included.<\/li><li>It points out that nearly 25% of all food\nproduced is either lost or wasted. And even the decomposition of the waste\nreleases emissions.<\/li><li>The report highlights that the global rise in\ntemperature has been much faster over land than over the entire planet. This\nadditional warming over land could have led to increased frequency, intensity\nand duration of heat-related events such as heat waves.<\/li><li>The report suggests that measures such as a)\nreduction in food wastage, b) sustainable agriculture practices and c) shifting\nof dietary preferences to include more plant-based food, could reduce GHG\nemissions and strengthen food security.<\/li><li>The IPCC is an intergovernmental body of the\nUnited Nations. It provides policymakers with regular scientific assessments on\nclimate change, its implications and potential future risks. It also puts forward\nadaptation and mitigation options.<\/li><li>The land report is the second special report of IPCC.\nThe IPCC also published a special report on 1.5C of warming in October 2018.
