{"id":90176,"date":"2019-11-19T11:46:29","date_gmt":"2019-11-19T06:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=11692"},"modified":"2019-11-19T11:46:29","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T06:16:29","slug":"national-policy-on-biofuels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-policy-on-biofuels\/","title":{"rendered":"National Policy on Biofuels"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The\ngovernment had notified new National Policy on Biofuels in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About National\nBiofuel Policy 2018:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Salient Features:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Policy categorises biofuels as:<ul><li>Basic biofuels- First Generation (1G) bioethanol and; biodiesel<\/li><li>Advanced Biofuels- Second Generation (2G) ethanol, Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) to drop-in fuels, Third Generation (3G) biofuels, bio-CNG etc.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It expands the scope of\n raw material for ethanol production by allowing use of Sugarcane Juice,\n Sugar containing materials like Sugar Beet, Sweet Sorghum, Starch\n containing materials like Corn, Cassava, Damaged food grains like wheat,\n broken rice, Rotten Potatoes, unfit for human consumption for ethanol\n production.<\/li><li>It allows use of surplus\n food grains for production of ethanol for blending with petrol with the\n approval of National Biofuel Coordination Committee.<\/li><li>Under the policy, a\n viability gap funding scheme for 2G ethanol Bio refineries of Rs.5000\n crore in 6 years in addition to additional tax incentives, higher purchase\n price as compared to 1G biofuels will be provided<\/li><li>It encourages setting up\n of supply chain mechanisms for biodiesel production from non-edible\n oilseeds, Used Cooking Oil, short gestation crops.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional\nInformation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Biofuel:<\/strong> Bio\nfuels are liquid\/ solid or gaseous fuels produced from biomass resources. They\nare used in place of, or in addition to, diesel, petrol or other fossil fuels\nfor transport, stationary, portable and other applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Classification of\nBiofuels:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>First generation biofuels<\/strong>: It refers to the fuels that have\n been derived from sources like starch, sugar, animal fats and vegetable\n oil.<\/li><li><strong>Second generation biofuels &#8211;<\/strong> These are produced from non-food\n crops, such as cellulosic biofuels and waste biomass (stalks of wheat and\n corn, and wood). Examples include advanced biofuels like biohydrogen,\n biomethanol.<\/li><li><strong>Third generation biofuels<\/strong> &#8211; These are produced from specially engineered\n energy crops such as algae.<\/li><li><strong>Fourth-Generation Biofuels:<\/strong> It uses genetically modified (GM)\n algae to enhance biofuel production.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Indian Government\nSchemes for Promoting Biofuels:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN\n(Jaiv Indhan- Vatavaran Anukool Fasal Awashesh Nivaran) Yojana<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The scheme was launched in 2019. It is\nimplemented by Ministry of Petroleum &amp; Natural Gas.<\/li><li>The scheme envisages providing financial support\nto Integrated Bio-Ethanol Projects using lignocellulosic biomass &amp; other\nrenewable feedstock<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sustainable\nAlternative towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) scheme:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It was launched in 2018. It is implemented by\nMinistry of Petroleum &amp; Natural Gas.<\/li><li>It envisages establishing 5000 Compressed Bio\nGas (CBG) plants across the country by 2023. <\/li><li>Under this scheme, Oil Public Sector\nUndertakings have invited Expression of Interest (EoI) for procuring CBG from\npotential entrepreneurs and has offered an assured price for off take of CBG.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ethanol Blended\nPetrol (EBP) programme<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It was launched in 2003. It is implemented by Ministry\nof Petroleum &amp; Natural Gas through Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).<\/li><li>Under the programme, OMCs sell ethanol blended\npetrol with percentage of ethanol up to 10% subject to its availability.
