{"id":90525,"date":"2020-05-18T22:43:49","date_gmt":"2020-05-18T17:13:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=15520"},"modified":"2020-05-18T22:43:49","modified_gmt":"2020-05-18T17:13:49","slug":"punjab-farmers-to-go-for-direct-seeding-of-rice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/punjab-farmers-to-go-for-direct-seeding-of-rice\/","title":{"rendered":"Punjab farmers\u2019 to go for direct seeding of rice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News: <\/strong>Due to labour shortage, Punjab farmers are turning towards direct seeding of rice(DSR) moving away from the traditional practice \u2014 of sowing nursery and then transplanting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Direct Seeding of Rice:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>DSR<\/strong> refers to the process of establishing a rice crop from seeds sown in the field rather than by transplanting seedlings from nursery.<ul><li>In transplanting, farmers prepare nurseries where paddy seeds are first sown and raised into young plants.These seedlings are then uprooted and replanted 25-35 days later in the main field with standing water.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>In<\/strong> <strong>DSR<\/strong>, as flooding of fields is not done during sowing, chemical herbicides are used to kill weeds.<ul><li>In transplanting, standing water acts as herbicide and prevents growth of weeds by denying them oxygen in the submerged stage.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Advantage of DSR:&nbsp;<\/strong><ul><li>Water savings<\/li><li>less numbers of labourers required,&nbsp;<\/li><li>saves labour cost and&nbsp;<\/li><li>reduce methane emissions<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Disadvantage of DSR:<\/strong>&nbsp;<ul><li>Seeds are exposed to birds, rats, and snails.<\/li><li>High weeds infestation<\/li><li>Non-availability of herbicides.<\/li><li>High requirement of seeds when compared to transplanting.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Due to labour shortage, Punjab farmers are turning towards direct seeding of rice(DSR) moving away from the traditional practice \u2014 of sowing nursery and then transplanting it.
