{"id":92074,"date":"2021-03-03T15:50:53","date_gmt":"2021-03-03T10:20:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=92074"},"modified":"2021-03-04T10:46:03","modified_gmt":"2021-03-04T05:16:03","slug":"sri-lanka-approved-the-west-container-terminal-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/sri-lanka-approved-the-west-container-terminal-proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka approved the &#8220;West Container Terminal&#8221; proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is the News?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved a proposal to develop Colombo Port\u2019s West Container Terminal(WCT) under a joint venture with India and Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>This proposal comes after Sri Lanka had pulled out of the 2019 tripartite agreement with India and Japan to develop the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/sri-lanka-writes-off-strategic-colombo-port-deal-with-india-japan\/\"><strong>East Container Terminal(ECT)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the West Container Terminal(WCT) Project:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location: <\/strong>The West Container Terminal(WCT) is strategically located next to a Chinese-run Colombo International Container Terminal(CICT).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Model: <\/strong>The terminal will be developed on a Build, Operate and Transfer(BOT) model for a period of 35 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Investors: <\/strong>For the project, Sri Lanka has asked India and Japan to nominate the investors. But neither India nor Japan has officially commented on the offer.\n<ul>\n<li>Earlier, India had approved Adani Ports to invest in the ECT project. However, Japan is yet to name an investor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stakes in WCT: <\/strong>India and Japan will have an 85% stake in the West Container Terminal.
